Remote Fob Problem

Recommended Posts

I've had the car since October and the remote fob has always been a bit intermittant often needing a few presses for the car to respond.

I changed the battery but it made no difference.

I have done the re-sync procedure a couple times when it didn't seem to work and it restored for a while.

On Sunday it stopped working completely, won't re-sync or anything.

Central locking still works fine with the key in the lock, and if I don't turn the ignition on within 15 seconds the alarm goes off as it should (sometimes immediately, but usually 15 secs), and the car starts so obviously central locking, alarm and immobiliser are all stlll working, just the remote isn't doing anything. I changed the battery again, the old one still has well over 3v though.

Last week I got VCDS to sort out an airbag issue (ended up being a broken wire in the door boot), so have had a look for codes relating to the key/remote.

There was an old code about key 2 having an intermittant fault (I only got 1 key with the car).

I had a locksmith check the key is transmitting and he says it is transmitting strongly.

Unable to find any current fault codes I started working through the measurement blocks on the convenience unit and on page 10 found the blocks for the remote. It says 0 remotes recognized.

So I looked up remote adaptation and gave that a try (set value 1, press test and then save and then hold unlock button for at least 1 second until something blinks), but it never blinks anything to confirm the key is accepted.

I have tried all sorts of combinations, test then hole the open button, test then save then OK then hold the button but it never gets to recognising the remote, and now when I check fault codes I get 01179 - incorrect key progromming, possible causes: remote control adpatation incomplete. Yep, that sounds exactly like the issue!

I must be missing something - anyone got any idea what?

Could it be a problem with the car antenna or wiring to it? I can't see a separate fuse for it and since central locking and alarm are working I'm guessing it won't be a fuse issue, more likely a broken wire. Anyone know where it is or how I can trace the wiring?

Thanks

Jim

If I remember correctly, the remote antenna on that generation is literally a small piece of wire connected to the control unit, I'm sure someone else will confirm.

I'd try clearing all learnt remotes and relearning the one you have. Should be adaption channel 000 and 001 as mentioned here: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/VW_Golf_(1K)_Comfort_System

If that doesn't work, it's possible the remote fob or CCM have been replaced at some point. Different versions can use different radio frequencies which can result in either intermittent or complete failures of the remote.

Might be worth ruling out interference issues. Does this behaviour happen everywhere or is it worse in some places than others? Are there any non-Skoda accessories installed in the car?

Another thought...

Is your car an Mk II or a Mk II Facelift? My Mk II Facelift has, from memory, two extra vertical elements in the rear screen heater that don't seem to make sense as part of the heating function and my previous Mk II didn't have. They're about the right length for a 430 MHz radio antenna. I wonder if these are the receive antenna for the fob. Does your rear screen heater work OK? It might be worth checking the wiring to it. Can someone confirm what these vertical elements are?

Thanks guys - I was away without phone or internet all weekend so just catching up.

VCDS said the convenience controller was seeing 0 keys registered, but I did try clearing the memory as well and that made no difference. I was using the Ross-tech wiki as a guide.

In terms of interference, it has always been a bit intermittant, but last Sunday it stopped working completely when I was in Nottingham and hasn't worked since. I have been home in the west of Scotland most of the time and in Northumberland at the weekend so pretty certain it is not an external interference limited to one location! Internally I have bluetooth speakerphone, TomTom, and my S9 when I am going for a longish journey, but none of those are plugged in or turned on for short journeys. As far as I am aware everything else is stock.

The fob has a skoda badge on it and looks pretty worn. It has clearly been opened up quite a few times so it is possible the board has been swapped at some point.

I'll have a look in the drivers footwell and see if I can identify the CCM and see if the antenna is still attached. Looking at the readout, it does not seem to have a serial number and one of the coding lines is also all 0's so it might time to find out how good the local(ish) indy Skoda specialist is.

I have been busy and still haven't resolved this - where do I find the CCM? I had a look in the drivers footwell (behind panels) and didn't spot it.

I saw a video for a golf which was behind the glove box - when I remove my glove box I see the studs the golf one mounts to, but mine is not there! (bracket looks different for Octavia)

Is it on the drivers side and I am having selective blindness, or is it hiding somewhere else like the central console?

Found it. Behind glove box on the left side hiding behind metalwork.

Swapped it for a S/H one, coded it the same and still unable to register the key.

Assume key is the problem despite locksmith confirming it is transmitting strongly.

Does the little light in the fob light up every time you press it. (just quick presses of the boot button, or test out of range of the car)

I have had to re-solder the internals of my mates vauxhall zafira fob as the battery holder had come away from the pcb so it sometimes worked, sometimes didn't, until repaired. And it got worse and worse until it was repaired.

You wouldn't have noticed it without inspection tho.

My Octavia fob is very worn, but never missed a beat so far (fingers crossed).

OK still have this problem.

Have now tried a friends old key (same year) and had a garage take a look (I think they tried a Golf key from same year)  and the CCM is refusingto learn any keys.

SInce I had the same issue with the second hand CCM (which was from a Golf) I am wondering if the coding in my CCM had got corrupted (I coded the second hand one the same, but I kept its code just in case).

Does anyone have a 2006 (or early 2007) 1.9 TDI elegance estate that could check the long coding for me?

The module is 1K0 959 433 BT (as was the Golf one I tried)

The long code I read from my original one was 81801A085283007F3F02050FC0085F96907C00

I have an autoscan in front of me.

The CCM is part number 1K0 959 433 AK

The coding is 01D002007F2D8505485F861004CC

Which does not look remotely like what you have.

2006 1.9TDi Elegance Estate.

Its your lookout but no way would I blindly recode something with a string of characters that look completely different to what my vehicle currently has, I could easily have made a typo.

I may have to change a Can gateway module on mine to stop the Chinese head unit discharging the battery, when I do I am going to look at my existing long coding, understand every chosen option and why and only change something if i am absolutely sure its the right thing to do, after copying the original code and only one thing at a time.

I may be off target, but is one not a BCM (body) and one a CCM (convenience) ???

I can't find complete documentation of all the options and I do have a spare module that accepts my original code so I figured the risk was minimal. Even if I screw one up I still have the other.

The AK and the BT are both listed as CCMs.

As for the light on the fob, I already covered that, yes it lights up brightly (I changed the battery twice to make sure), so does the key I borrowed and the one the garage tried. Timpson tested my key and confirmed it was transmitting strongly so I am pretty confident the key shouldn't be the problem. Strange that 2 modules exhibit the same problem with the original code.

The only thing I haven't tried is trying to learn a key with the code that

Was in the Golf module because I was concerned it might be configured to talk to different sub modules, I was hoping same year and spec Octavia would have the same sub modules, but it appears J.R.s has a different CCM as and different sub modules so it isn't quite as easy as I'd hoped.

I have now tried 2 secondhand CCMs plus my original and attempts have been made to code 3 different keys (mine, a friends, and a garage tried with a key they had) all of which seem to be transmitting fine but none of the CCMs detect them.

I'm back to my original thought that the antenna must be separate from the CCM and/or a wire is broken between the CCM module and the antenna or between the CCM and some other module. Any ideas?

As far as I can tell the remote for this age of car is all done by the CCM and not the BCM as on later cars, the fact that the CCM appears in VCDS and has the adaptation for the remote keys on it supports this.

A new complication is that I lost my only key over the weekend and have a locksmith coming to make me a couple of new ones (fingers crossed), I explained that there seems to be a problem synching remote fobs and he said that won't affect the coding to the immobiliser, but I guess only having aftermarket keys is going to make it even more difficult to nail the remote problem down now!
