How Robust Are Tyre Valves?

Featured Replies

Just done my monthly check of the tyre pressures, which involved removing the Tyre Pressure Sensor fitted to the valve.

After verifying the pressure, I screwed the TPS back on only to hear a slight pop and air hissing out of the base of the valve.

Never had that happen in any of the cars I've owned or been responsible for in over 30 years of driving. I didn't even use that much force.

The wheels were swapped over last week after having hunter alignment carried out. Tyres are Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance. Approximately 3 years old, and passed as in good condition during the above alignment.

Is this common, and should I get the garage to check the remaining valves too?

Valves are robust.  Which is why you have never had issues in over 30 years, same as nearly everyone else.

Where new ones fitted 3 years ago when the tyres were fitted.

I presume so. Tyres were bought online (Blackcircles IIRCC) and I think fitted by either one of the Skoda dealerships I use for servicing, but couldn't say for definite.

Is this an aftermarket device that replaces the normal black plastic dust cap on a 414 type valve?

Or is it an active TPMS valve with the electronic box inside the tyre/wheel?

Thanks AG Falco

Could it be because of corrosion around the valve hole on the alloy? Had issues myself. Usually involves some wheel sealant around a newly inserted valve at worst,  should a through clean up not help. Some say a few drops of thread lock also works. These are my views rightly or wrongly. Safety police may insist on a full alloy refurb.

It's this;

I think I may have solved it. The above product was bought to replace another system I had (different manufacturer) due to one of the TPS seizing onto the tyre valve. Took it to one of the major tyre fitters and they cut it off and replaced the valve free of charge.

It threw me that it was a different wheel, but I've swapped from summer to winter and back again since then. So it's possible this may be the wheel with the leaking valve.

Put some grease on the threads to stop then seizing on the valves.

Also have the shorter 412 valves fitted to the wheels next tyre change.

This will protect the TPS caps better from the elements and from kerbs.

These will also put less strain on the valve base where it fits the wheel.

HTH.

Thanks AG Falco

The OP advises others to do that.

I seem to remember we had a wee difference of opinion on places changing wheel for much cheapness or free.

Sometime you get what you pay for, or not as the case might be.

Lesson learnt from the seized TPS on the valve, I bought a big tub of Copperease and ensured there was a plentiful coating on each valve before installing the TPS.

Hence why I submitted the comment that George is quoting.

What is involved in repairing or replacing this valve?

Old valve off,

Tyre bead off rim or tyre completely off the rim and new valve fitted.

Checking to see the it will seat OK, no corrosion, and new valve pulled though and seated.

And use tyre paste/sealant on the valve in the seating area, and not tyre lubricant.

This will help to stop air leaking from the valve/wheel seal.

About a tenner at your local fitters..........

Thanks for all your input.

Car is currently on the ramp at Kwik Fit. Been quoted £6.50.

One thing I'm not happy with is, I've just noted a ruddy great big rust patch on the bottom of OSR door. Not that it means20190331_135453.thumb.jpg.42d3b3579c925401b352dd6accb3b063.jpg anything these days, but vehicle was given a clean bill of health at last dealer service. If I noticed it whilst vehicle was raised, why not the' Tech' carrying it the VHC?

Quick update. All changed over. George you better sit down for this....

No charge.

Wonderful, hope you put money in the tea tin.

Re the Main Dealer body checks, annual or b-annual.

Have you got copies of the reports or seen them when the car was in for Servicing?

I make sure I get a copy of the VHC paperwork when I collect the vehicle. The last several services have included video updates of them carrying out the VHC as well.

Three of the doors have the beginnings of rust in the same location.

You mean the Vehicle Health Check that all should get.

I am asking about the Body Inspection Report that Skoda UK are knocking back some warranty claims on Corrosion and Paint because no record of.

Do you have that?  Used to be a page after every service page when there were service books, now should be put on the system.

All round body inspection for paint / corrosion, damage or poor repairs to damage.

What about when the Bodywork was done already, is it the same car, and was a body inspection done then?

Edited by Skoffski

The real issue I have is both dealerships close to me have now been told they must use the same bodyshop for all paint work.

The same bodyshop that was driving around in my vehicle when it should have been left to dry. And will probably éxplain why less than two years later the rust returned with a vengeance.

I also raised issues regarding scratches to the bodywork, and damaged trim.

According to SUKCS this was resolved between the dealership and the bodyshop. They just didn't involve me in the matter.

Anyway, that's for a different thread!

Happy for this to be put to bed.
