Hello from a new (2nd hand) Scout owner.

Featured Replies

Hi, having owned a 2000 Octavia 1.9 PD estate for 10 years I decided that with 200000 miles on the clock it was time for an upgrade. I can't afford a new one but have found a nice 1 owner full service history 2008 Scout 2.0 TDI with 100000 miles on the clock. I have always viewed the forum but have now decided to sign up as I am keen to learn about looking after the haldex unit for the 4wd and taking care of the PDF as it is the first vehicle I have had with one on. If this one is as reliable as the last one I shall be a very happy bunny!

That looks very nice

I find this forum so refreshing having spent the past 5 years with Land Rover products and hanging on their forums.  You rarely see any posts where someone has some decent milage on their cars and are happy to buy a car such as yours.

I am SO looking forward to getting my Skoda next week!

(out of interest, just looked at the Velar forum, since 5pm Friday around 70% of all posts are reporting problems with the car! )

I recently made the same move from an ultra reliable 1.9 TDi Estate to a MK2 with same Elegance spec and even the same colour, also similar mileage to yours, I had done 325000 in the MK1

It took me a lot of getting used to, as a drivers car it is not a patch on the MK1 and a real dissapointment, on the positive side its so familiar, all the chnages have been minor and all are improvements, some quite major, aside from the driving dynamics, the lack of feedback there is nothing that is a backward step or that I miss from the original.

I think it could be as reliable but its achilles heel is the increasingly complicated electronics, VCDS and a good understanding of the Canbus architecture is a must, in the 14 years that I had the MK1 I never even knew that it had some Canbus electronics thats how reliable they were but it was the failure of them and my ignorance of the system, the need for VCDS etc that led to me regrettably scrapping the vehicle.

How do you find the MK2 compares to your MK1?

Hi J.R. I had a 1.9 and this is the 2.0 with a dpf and as you said it drives completely different. The 1.9 was very smooth in the power delivery the 2.0 is quite flat and then the turbo kicks in and it takes off. I notice it most in 1st gear when pulling away from lights it is very hard to make quick but smooth progress. I like the greater ground clearance as it is the Scout and the more modern interior and exterior looks. I have only had it a week so I am sure I will find other things better and worse than the old faithful!

Driving feedback aside, and TBH I have now got used to that (sad!) I have not found anything which was not an improvement and nothing good removed, in fact I am still finding little things, only yesterday I saw a red mark where the rear seat release latch is when loading from the rear, turned out the seat back had not been completely engaged.

The storage locker under the passenger seat was a really nice surprise find, you have found that havn't you!!!!

All the little storage lockers especially the dash top one and the glasses storage case by the rear view mirror are very practical, the drinks bottle holder in the door pockets is excellent, its exactly the place where I had squeezed in my Sigg bottle on the old car.

Yes very flat power delivery but mine does not have a DPF and the turbo lag is not so pronounced, the MK1 was silky smooth from tickover you never really felt it cutting in, the engine sounds very knocky/rorty, (cant find the right word) under load, generally less refined, an ECU change to 140 ish claimed hp has transformed it.

I absolutely hate the electric power steering, I think its that more than anything which has removed the feedback to the driver, as I said I am now used to it and its no different to any modern car, a lot better than the later vehicles. I spent a day a few years ago driving vehicles through the Lycée Pro workshop on Telethon day for fluid check ups etc, they were all newer than my MK1 and I had not driven any other or newer car since moving to France, I hated every one of them, heavy flabby incredibly confined in the drivers seat and it felt like a driving simulator, no feeling of contact with the road surface.

Then I got in a cherished base model Renault 5, no power assisted anything, wind up windows but doors that were light enough to close with a click and not a smash and an absolute joy to drive, pedals and steering sublime, it made my day yet in its day it was not even as good as average.

A warm welcome to the Forum !  I had a new Mercedes W124 250D in 1987 and it did 300K without any huge problems.  Still regret moving it on.  Nice photo by the way:thumbup:
