Rear engine "drone" sound

Featured Replies

Lately my 1.5 Petrol DSG Edition has been exhibiting a quiet "droning" tone with the engine running, either stationery or moving. The pitch is constant, regarding of speed (imagine a long organ note sound). It's not very loud but it's definitely there, and, annoyingly, it is not happening all the time and can be gone the next day. Anyone know what it could be? (It's different to the low drone I get when driving slowly with the steering fully turned one way or the other - I presume this to be my Bridegstone tyres as another thread here has indicated).

Have you tried making tyre pressure adjustments to see if there is a different drone?

Starting with all 4 towards the ECO pressure, then dropping them by a few PSI after some driving until you get to the lower safe pressures.

I've always had the tyres at the lowest recommended PSI for maximum comfort on these 19" wheels. Car is 10 months old but this noise only started happening a couple of months ago. And the engine "drone tone" in the rear is still the same when the car is stationery.

Best not put off having a Master Tech check it out then.

I would still go put a bit more air in the tyres and see if the noise changes,

and inspect the tyres closely for wear, saw toothing or the likes.

Read the OP folks, its not the tyres, as its there when the car is stationary!

Some suggestions

Could be heater/ventilation fan(s)/ a/c try turning off or changing speed.

Could be the DSG electric oil pump

Could be fuel pick up pump in the tank

Could be electric secondary coolant pump

Could be coming via infotainment system, stick ear next to speakers.

Yes sorry totally lost the plot.

So forget tyres.

Just do not put off seeing a Dealership Master Tech and having the car inspected and test driven.

Re 10 month old car and noise starting a couple of months ago.

?

Could that be when winter started and some change in Heater / AC settings?

Thanks everyone. It's intermittent, I went for a drive this morning and engine is as quiet as a mouse again. I'll keep my eye (ear) on it and mention it to the dealer in May when it's time for the first annual service.

i think this is due to wind as i was sat in my car during a break at work and the engine was off and heard the same sound you describ and it was very windy outside never heard it since

Had you forgotten fitting (Kodiaq) RS noise enhancement components to your Karoq?

It's not wind noise nor is it a noise enhancement box. It's an intermittent constant sound that I'll get the dealer to look at on the car's first annual service.

Let them know in writing before the Service that you have concerns or want something checked and not just as you hand over your keys.

Maybe there are just fitters and apprentices about on the day your car service is being done and the Tech with good hearing and training might be on holiday.

Great advice Skoffski - I'll do just that!
