Superb 1.5 TSi manual - 1st/2nd gear fix

Featured Replies

I had a call from my dealer yesterday to say the fix is available and my car is booked in for mid-April. I know there's a long and busy thread on this on the Karoq forum and one or two reports are now coming in to say that the fix seems to be effective, but I am keen to hear from Superb owners who have had this done. Feedback here, please!

Curious to know how you get on.  I am still waiting for my Superb 1.5 to be delivered (been at Emden for 6 weeks now).  Its a DSG, curious if the fix is applicable to DSG cars as well.  Know they were far less impacted by the issues on the 1.5.  If so will be asking my dealer to do the upgrade before I take delivery, if the car ever gets shipped that is.

I would be checking with Skoda UK that import the cars that the car has not left the factory needing a Software Update / Patch.

It should be landing in the UK WLTP Certificated and without issues like those that Skoda currently have sitting off road because some can be dangerous,

and that is manuals and DSG's.

Had mine in today... 1.5tsi DSG.. Noticeable improvement so far... Will be interesting to see in the morning if it judders from cold

To the people who’ve had the update - had you previously complained? How bad was it before?

My 1.5 manual has been ok but I do kind of feel like I know what people mean. I’m still getting used to a petrol again after a couple of diesels.

I had complained on mine and was scheduled to go in and have it inspected on the very day of the s/w release... so lucky me I got the update there and then - just 30 mins of a wait while they applied it and test drove.

We had 2 x very cold mornings here in Southern Ireland and no problems since upgrade and engine seems a lot smoother to drive in all gears. so a thumbs up for me

Thanks for the report - sounds encouraging!

A couple of questions: is your car a manual and do you know whether there was more than one update?

DSG as per previous Post - No idea if it was more than 1 x update

Logged on today specifically to check if there is news of this update, knowing Briskodians would be on the case.

Got my new 1.5TSI DSG estate on 9 March and have about 700miles on it. I get a slight surge forward on take-off if I have the handbrake or stop/start applied.

Not overly dramatic but definitely there. More annoying with stop/start on.

My wife's Karoq is like a bouncy castle in 1st gear (same engine/DSG).

Good to know this is available and makes a difference for DSG box as well. I'll post again  when I get the update

Interesting review by Auto Express this week in which they comment on a car with the 1.5 engine:

"Straight away the powertrain comes in for questioning, because the DSG gearbox’s clutch take-up is strange, sometimes surging or lagging and then moving off aggressively. It’s not the smoothest way to make progress, while some of the shifts at lower revs when coming to a standstill are also a little clunky. These points affect the Superb’s low-speed driveability."

Thanks @driventodevon

I've really no complaints about the 1.5TSI in terms of its power train and I had a 2.0L 150 Diesel Superb for nearly 7 years.

The main issue is the DSG clutch take up. I've had surging but never lagging and if you push hard then the take off can surge. I actually put this down to the electronic break.

It does not release quickly enough and almost 'holds' the car as it takes off.

Haven't experienced the coming to a standstill issue. In terms of oomph I really have no complaints. It goes extremely well and I'm still in awe as to how this engine does it.

A postscript to my earlier post. My wife took her Kodiaq for service on 7 June when she was expecting the 'fix' to be applied. She was told that the software fix had been withdrawn because it was not fixing the problem and a new fix was expected shortly.

Skoda have a problem here and once they drop to third place in Autoexpress reviews then I expect they will start to apply a fix. The DSG moves up the early gears to 4th too quickly IMO and thats what can cause jerkiness. I suspect the same is true when coming to a standstill.

However, I find smooth application of the accelerator pretty much takes care of all of the above except the 'brake hold' issue which is just a tad too long.

Evening,

I have a Superb 1.5 manual and I also had the kangaroo starts, etc. I have had the fix applied and it has helped with the smoothness 2nd gear and up. On cold starts I do still keep getting the kangaroo start, not as bad most times but when colder it has been as bad as before. I also find that below 15 mph and below 2000 rpm the car seems flighty and tentative. Once warmed up for the most part it's ok. I have complained to my dealer again and apparently there is another fix in the pipeline due in two to three months. I have taken to driving my Son's Fabia for my commute in the morning as it give a much better drive, I also tried to return the car as I was so fed up with it but got nowhere as the car is now over a month old.  Fingers crossed the next fix will sort it out as I only use the car for longer journeys where it can warm up and not have to be 1st gear much.

Have you taken delivery yet?

Still waiting for info on mine...ordered in February and still no confirmed build week!

Er, you may not have been well advised on this.

Hi Mike,

I had the same sort of problem took 16 weeks from order until delivery (April), I ordered my Wife's Fabia 5 weeks after mine and it was delivered a week before mine, go figure. I think the fix is also for DSG models but as you said I don't think they are as badly affected.

I think this is becoming an issue in the motoring press. I was surprised to see Autoexpress pick up on this in their review posted by @driventodevon above.

I thought the review described the 'symptoms' for DSG box very well. The other thing is that the car adapts to the way you drive over time. My dealer principal told me it took about 600 miles to settle to a driving style. I think that's the reason I don't find much surging from take-off.

The last fix did not comprehensively solve the problem I was told and actually made the problem worse for some drivers. Not good to recall a software fix so I think (hope) Skoda will be working overtime to get the next fix release right.

Mine was in the dealers on Friday for another issue. I mentioned that I was having an issue with the car bogging down when moving for D to R and trying to reverse onto my drive and asked about a s/w update for the 1.5 ‘issue’ and was told that there was no update for my car.

I think that's strictly true at the moment since the fix has been withdrawn, as opposed to 'no update needed for your car'.

Have been following this with interest as we pick up a new 1.5 TSI manual Superb Estate on Saturday. Hoping we don’t have the same issue and that Skoda have ‘fixed’ it before our was manufactured.

I'm afraid they won't have a fix for it. I had a good talk with my dealer service people. As far as I can gather (and it sounds strange) the fix worked on some cars and not so well on others. On some it increased the revs and helped with some of the manual cars but not all. It didn't seem to fix the hunting through 1-3 gear in the DSG and the quick succession changes down coming to a halt which feels like the car was shuddring a bit. I experienced that a few times in the early miles but now seems to have cleared itself.

My dealer could say when the next attempt at a fix will be, but my hope is that Skoda start to realise that the issue is seeping into the auto press as well as the annoyance of existing drivers and make sure that the next fix really does sort the problem. I don't think they can afford to get it wrong  second time.

Congrats on your buy. This is my third Superb. First two were diesels. Notwithstanding the gear issue I think the 1.5TSI is a lovely engine and I think you will enjoy it too.

Many thanks for your update, let’s hope ours is ok. We’re moving from a Yeti to the Superb as looking for more boot space. looking forward to Saturday now!

Finally settled the issue with my Superb, the decision maker at the Valley road dealership in Plympton, Plymouth still insists I have not given him a chance to fix the problem, as the fix that they applied was not for the issues I still have although that’s exactly what he said it would fix when I was looking to return the car within the first thirty days. Trusting him was a mistake that has cost me £2500.

Surprisingly it was the Finance company that upheld my complaint and have agreed to give me a full refund less wear and tear of £675 with additions like extended warranty, etc making up the remainder of the £2500 loss.

Skoda UK were also very good although as a franchise they had difficulty reasoning with the dealership that have been anything but helpful, should have gone to Carr’s at Exeter from the looks of other posts and the superior way they treat their customers compared to my dealership.

Skoda UK also sent me a lovely hamper as a sorry for my inconvenience. Any way just waiting for the car to be taken away now and may go for one of the new Octavia’s as they look like mini Superb’s next, but not from the same dealership.

Disappointing result from the financial point of view, but you must be pleased to have a resolution to this.

(Yes, Carrs of Exeter were as helpful to me as they could have been; if I was ever in the market for another Skoda, I would go to them again.)
