loud whistle/siren. No boost, no hiss

Featured Replies

My TDI has been without boost and sounding like a police car.

Is it possible that a hole in the boost pipe has caused this or is it a case of my turbo is stuffed?

Could be the dv has knackered itself. And is blowing off

Check that and then all your pipes really carefully for splits.

.... and then take the TIP off and check the impellor

Is that the turbo to pancake pipe?

Edit: air intake box to turbo. That explains a lot. It got worse after air filter change.

I'll pop it off and check.

TDI’s don’t have a DV, the turbos are VNT and have vanes in them that can get stuck with soot build up. Usually when they start sounding like a police siren it’s normally the turbo itself on its way out. Obviously check for any pipes that may have come off (especially if over boosting), also check for any fault codes stored as you can get an over/under boost but no EML on. Also take the TIP off (easier from underneath) and check for play in the turbo shaft, if ok there should be very little up and down movement and 0 in and out movement. If any of the two are exaggerated then the turbo cartridge is knackered.

Hope that helps?

Haven't been able to check the turbo but the friendly mechanic has. Turbo has gone. Have decided against repairs as I'd never see the money back and the mk2 is costing more than I'd hoped.

Will remove the stereo, rarb and chuck it up ebay in the hopes of getting at least a few hundred back. Maybe someone will want to change the turbo as it's decently spec'd. :(
