Front shocks change - what to choose?

Featured Replies

My nearside front shock has developed a leak, so I will be looking at getting a new pair.

I am quite content with how the car is handling and all, but I think I would perhaps welcome something a bit harder than the factory one.

Should I go for OEM, or is it worth getting something premium? I would welcome any advice  :)

It's the 2.0 TDI DSG 06 plate estate.

Depends on what you prefer in a car.

On my 2005 1.9TDI  I have to replace them as well. Right front has a very small leak, but still works reasonable. However, last week my left front spring broke.

Since I have to replace the springs, I'll do the shocks as well.

I'd recommend changing the springs in your case as well, especially if they are still the original ones. Eventually they will break, and since they have to come off anyway to replace the shock, its not that much more to replace them right away.

I've bought Monroe spings and absorbers. I prefer sticking to known brands for these kind of repairs. A OEM (/ some unknown brand) will probable save you 30-50GBP in material costs for each side, but for me, suspension is too important to try 'unknown' stuff. (Also for the tyres). For eg my AC condensor, I used the cheapest one I could find. If it fails, it's not a safety issue.. So on those things I don't care :)

As for brands: I also have heard good reports about Billstein shocks and springs.

The B4 appears to be a (small) upgrade from the OEM.

The B6 and above are more harder, and more towards a very sporty ride. The harder, the less comfort, but the better the handling.

If you're using it as a daily drive or on longer trips, I doubt if eg a B12 set will be a smart solution...

I'll replace mine probably next weekend, so I'm curious to see how the new Monroes perform on my car.

If you're planning on DIY like I am, please be aware that you need some less common tools, so be sure you have them

(18mm sockets, 21mm sockets, spline bits, spring compressors, to name some)
