Potentially getting 2011-era Yeti, what to look out for?

Featured Replies

Hi,

3 years back I had to scrap my 2000 MK1 1.6 Octavia, having it passed down through family.

Ah, the memories of a first car; how that engine survived being punished with how I pushed it, I will never know. It was the electronics that gave out, and considering its age the cost for fixing it here was not within reason.

Since then I've been having a 2007 2.0T Mitsubishi Outlander, which is starting to show its age with issue after issue. I have a pile of fixes ahead of me that would total roughly 1/3 of what an used 2011 Yeti costs here.

So, I'm now looking into an upgrade. I have become fond of the smaller SUVs, especially with some engine potential.

Yeti with 1.8 TSI 160 hp engine fits into this category, and models aged 2010-2012 seem to be in my price range.

But I'm not very read up on the 2010+ Skoda engines, did some quick searching and them drinking some oil still seems to be a thing.

Are there any obvious red flags to watch out for?

I found that the 1.2 (?) and 1.4 TSI engines had timing chain problems in this age span, does this apply to the 1.8 as well?

My most local second hand dealer actually had one which I test drove, it was the fully featured version with panorama roof and whatnot. While the roof is very appealing, are there any known problems with it maybe leaking or something? I'm a bit vary of extra features that can give out.

Otherwise I quite like the Yeti, and have done since they were released. Driving it proved it a very comfortable car to drive, and the engine had at least some kick to it.

Oh well.

Thanks for any pointers,

M

Welcome.

No 1.4 TSI from that period to concern you, and that was 1.4 TSI Twinchargers that had issues, so only in Mk2 Fabia.

The 1.2 & 1.8TSI from the period you are looking at are the ones you want to be careful with, and maybe look for cars with engines that have had the upgrades carried out.

Look at the pinned thread at the top of the Octavia Mk2 Section on 1.8 & 2.0 TSI's.

The 1.8 petrol was a relatively rare car and apparently was not that reliable, and used loads of fuel, so was discontinued early.

If you want that power the 170ps diesel is the one to get, and apparently least affected by the emmision fix update that is almost certainly done to most.

Probably best to avoid any car with a sunroof due to leakage and frame cracking risk.

Early cars are likely to have issues with wiring breaking going to doors. If this hasn’t happened yet and been repaired, it will fail at over £100 per door.

Thanks for the tip of that thread, that's quite a comprehensive list in the OP already.

That bad, huh? Hm. Interesting, I guess I'll continue scouring through the options that show up within reasonable distance.

The diesel doesn't sound bad either; I've not yet owned diesel. Maybe that should change now.

Thanks to you both for the insights, it's really appreciated!

There were 1.4TSI (122BHP) Yetis made around 2011-12, but I'm not sure if they suffered with the Chain issue?

They certainly did.

@enor

Euro 5 1.4 TSI / TFSI 132-136 kw Twinchargers had Timing Chain issues, more so the CTHE from 2012 than the CAVE from 2009 with the other issues with Pistons and rings, valves etc.

. As had the Euro 4 Twinchargers and 1.4TSI.

How common were issues or are issues with a 1.4 TSI / TFSI 105 / 122ps Euro 5 engine from 2009?

This forum has had quite a few members with 1.4TSI Octavia Mk2 that have not reported issues, certainly not the issues that those with the Chain Driven 1.2, 1.8 & 2.0 TSI's have.

EDIT,

I remember this post you made.

If you're more performance orientated, also bear in mind the 170 diesel is fitted with larger diameter (312mm) brakes as standard, I don;t think any other models were.

And they remap reliably to ~200-205bhp.
