Window regulator fail

Featured Replies

Hello ladies and gents

I need a bit of advice please. My window regulator has failed for the 3rd time in as many years. Its now stuck in the down position, and I can't pull it up at all. I'm trying to remove the regulator panel, but, after drilling out the 10 rivets, its still not coming away - is this because the window is preventing it from being removed? If so, how can i solve this? Any advice is wholly welcome, thank you.

You need to drill out the four rivets securing the regulator to the door carrier panel. The panel will then come off.

Lee, you're a star mate, thank you very much. I'll give it a go today. Obviously Im going to need to replace the rivets - any suggestions on what rivet gun a need to get?

No probs :)

Window regulator to carrier rivets are 4.8x15mm. Part number N90765701 (these also fit the door speaker).

Door carrier rivets are 6.4x10mm. Part number N91078801

A lazy tongs riveter capable of taking those sizes is ideal.

Thanks again Lee. Any reason why the regulator keeps failing - 3rd time in 3 years - is it a common fault? Its a real pain and expensive to get repaired.

It's a very common failure for the steel regulator cable to snap but three times in as many years seems way too often. I'm not sure why that would be unless the replacements have been poor quality. Did you replace them with the whole panel with regulator already assembled on it or was it just one of the repair kits?

I didn't replace them myself Lee, first time garage did it, then it failed again within 6 months and they fixed it again under guarantee. But I'm thinking if this is going to be a regular failure every 2 years, then I'm going to have to learn to fix it myself. But its a right pain, especially drilling out the rivets.
