RNS 510 Radio Head Unit

Featured Replies

Hi I have a Skoda Octavia 2006 mark 2 elegance 2L diesel.  I have currently the stock factory Skoda stream mp3 unit And would like to replace it with specifically RNS 510  Head unit however I have two questions mainly as the rns 510 is a Columbus model in Skoda but also vw cars have an rns 510 however are not Columbus. They are generally cheaper as for vw but would they work in my Skoda Octavia mk2 and if so would the vw logo come up instead of Skoda ‘welcome aboard’.

Secondly I have found a couple rns 510 Columbus head units online without any cables.

Now I believe as my car is a mark to pre-facelift it will need an adapter 1din to 2din adapter and a antenna for gps. Is that everything I would need if I bought the unit alone with no cables. I will also ask for the radio code. As my budget is really up to £200

i found the wires here I think they are correct

https://incartec.co.uk/Skoda/Octavia-Mk2-Typ-1Z/Stereo-Upgrade-Double-Din/JVC-Double-Din/93

and this is the vw unit I think might be compatible with my Octavia

That ebay unit you linked to is not an RNS510, it's a chinese clone lookalike unit. Is that what you're after?

If you want a Skoda Columbus or an RNS510 then at the age of your car you'll need to replace the CAN Gateway to prevent battery drain (essentially your car was made before the Columbus was designed and built so they don't talk to each other correctly). After that, I have a cheap Columbus in the sales section which has a minor issue but is fully functional, and is within your budget.

Edit: Also, the cables you've linked to are not correct. They're the wrong way round, for putting an aftermarket unit into a later Octavia. You need something like this, but you may also need a canbus emulator. I'm not sure as I've not worked on a car as old as yours. It'll either need the emulator or the CAN Gateway, one or the other.

Hi yes could you send me a link to the Columbus you have.

It's in this thread here.

You've just jogged my memory, I haven't uploaded any pics. I'll do so as soon as possible.

Your existing stereo should already use quadlock so there is no need to get a quadlock/iso harness.

You are correct that you'd need a GPS antenna though :)

GPS antenna will be included in the Columbus sale. Everything else appears to be correct , but I've not looked in a car as old as yours.

I watched a video on how to install a rns 510 Columbus into a mk2 1 year newer than my 2006 and they had a single din wire from the old stream unit and had adapter from 1din to 2din as I think the Columbus rns 510 is double din where could I buy one of these wires

At 7 minutes in

The quadlock is disconnected at 3:44 and looks to match that used on the RNS-510/Columbus.

At 7 minutes in, they are fitting a fakra adaptor which is for the FM/AM antennas, such as this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162065015340

Oh, one other thing to mention, the Stream and RNS-510/Columbus need a different shaped facia/radio trim panel too.

Ok if I was to purchase this how should I pay through PayPal? Also what type of postage. i live in Lincolnshire

also how would you update maps

Edited by Adamusmani

Maps can be updated by either removing the hard drive and copying directly, or if you send it back I'll do it for free. But bear in mind the age of these units now will mean that possibly there'll be no further updates in the future.

Postage would be either Royal Mail or UPS. Or if you wanna turn up here then I'll fit it for you, and code it with VCDS.

PayPal friends & family is the payment option, or cash if you come to collect.

If you can find the gateway location on your car and can get access to it then everything else is straight forward. Fitting would be the equivalent of the postage so £15.

I'm near Scotch Corner - Richmond area

I will check for the location for the gateway location tomorrow and message after I have searched and I believe it is either behind the glovebox and the it could also be near the steering wheel but i will check tomorrow but either way I would really like to buy the unit.

Cool.

If yours is a 2006 the gateway is behind the glovebox.

It's dead easy to swap over.
