Hi all,

Probably a frequently asked question but on friday im picking up a 2016 oct scout with 30k on the clock.

What would be the service interval for the haldex ( and am i right in assuming it will be a 5th generation unit) ?

Have a look at this thread on the Golf R forum.  Having the Haldex oil changed does not normally include cleaning the filter and it is the build up on the filter that kills the pump or Haldex. I had my Haldex oil changed and the pump removed to clean the filter at 7k miles by an independant and it was amongst the dirtiest.  If Skoda dealers are like VW dealers they say the filter does not need cleaning and will not removed the pump to do so - there is no separate filter on the R and I would assume the same on the Octy as it is screwed to the pump itself.  VW seem to prefer to wait till either the pump fails or the Haldex packs up - normally outside warranty so will cost you a fortune.

Yes it is a Haldex 5th gen and as @octavia5 says above I would not really go by the manufacturer intervals or recommendations regarding Haldex.

 

I have run Haldex machines of all generations and whilst I like the system, it needs looking after. VW do not clean the filter, but that is not as bad as Ford who said the Haldex III and IV units were non-service Items.

 

Personally I would service it now (and clean the filter) see what it is like before deciding when to do it again.

Thanks all, the skoda franchised  dealer may change the oil in the  haldex as part of the pre sale service but given the info on here it sounds as if a strip down and filter clean every year would be a wise choice.

Ill probably be using a vag independant for future services so ill ask what they can offer.

Im also willing to have a go myself so that might be an option.

- What do you use to clean the filter by the way?

- will disconnecting the wiring trigger any fault codes  ?

- Does the battery need disconnecting first ?

Indys are normally quite happy to remove the pump and clean the filter - just needs flushing off or use a soft brush, they will have their methods. No fault codes and no need to removed the battery, just leave the car ignition turned off for 5 mins before disconnect.

 

DIY instructions in links, most do not change the rubber seals or bolts but there is a 'service kit' available - all details in my link.

 

Depending on miles done I would get it cleaned every couple of years, mine was filthy after just 7k miles and with no launches to stress the Haldex.

Thanks folks.

Ive rang a local VAG indy and spoke to a knowlagable bloke who straight away knew whch haldex i would have given the year of the vehicle. He then went on to explain that they have an internal filter on the pump which needs to be removed and cleaned to do a proper job rather than just drain and refill as the main dealers would do.

 

It was reassuring that straight away he knew what would be involved. He said £120 for them to do it.

 

Im tempted go get that done once i get settled with the new car. ☺

I would definitely get it done, my oil was drained and refilled at Skoda in accordance with service regime when new, but I have removed the pre-charge pump and cleaned myself and it was filthy! its easier on a ramp to do the job,  as the wiring loom loom is held tight to Haldex case and a bit awkward to remove. 

 

 

Good luck and if possible ask the Indy to take before and after photos out of interest.

I picked the car up yesterday and was told they haldex hadnt been serviced as it wasnt due which to be honest is what i expected.  Happy to take it along to the independant however for them to do the work.

I havent driven may miles in it but i really like it so far !

Hopefully you’ve had your Haldex fluid changed and all was good.


I had access to a ramp so thought I’d do the Haldex Fluid change again. 
18 months and only 8000 miles elapsed, but things are looking good this time.


The first three pictures are as the pump was removed, last image is after the filter was cleaned off before refitting with new O rings, filler and drain plug plus bolts for pump.

The fluid was nice and clean when drained.

 

It is worth doing this job properly and removing the pump when charge fluid.

 

I used VCDS to run the pump motor to finish.
 

No fault codes were present on the AWD module.
