Bit of clarity around variations

Featured Replies

Having had 18 inch Gemini’s and 19 inch Xtreme’s I would always go for the Xtreme’s. They are lighter, look better, make no difference to the ride quality or road noise and make the car look ‘right’. To be candid, the vRS does not ride very well anyway, NVH levels of Octavia’s are deliberately mediocre so they are noisier than a Golf. If you want a car that rides well and is quiet on the move, go for something else. The Octy isn’t bad, but from me experience of them, it doesn’t matter if you go for 17, 18 or 19 inch wheels they ride the same so my advise would be to go for the 19’s and enjoy the car!

  • Greetings Alex    My 1992 Accord was probably one of the best cars I've owned.  Had a bad habit of blowing its brake light, and we never found out why, but that was decades ago, and I've for

  • I've had the accord for 12 years now and I've driven many much more modern cars and tbh, if they still made the ATR and had isofix and air con, of just get another.  It's an excellent mix of size, pow

  • Yeah, to be honest, it's not the ride that puts me off the 19s it's the design. The black ones kinda look like black disks with silver petals on. I much prefer the design of thin spoked whee

There are hundreds, perhaps thousands,of alloy wheels of different designs and we all like different things.

Personally I actively dislike the design of the Xtreme wheels, and, for instance find the design of the 19" wheels fitted to the current   Leon Cupras much more to my taste.

This is all a matter of individual choice,so it matters not either way.

However what is fact is that as wheel diameters go up and tyre profiles get lower then so ride quality deteriorates, the steps may be small but they do exist.

The Leon Cupra on 19s which I had until recently did ride nicely on the 19s....with the standard DCC in comfort mode, hence why I have ordered it on my (slowly ) forthcoming 245 Estate.

It should also be noted that the Challenge 245 comes with standard 19s AND Dcc,for a good reason I believe.

I much prefer the design of thin spoked wheels myself, so the Geminis just look nicer.

But I'm not sure if I can 'downgrade' a car that in paying more for...

I'll be getting rid of the 19s if I keep the 245. Main reason is for thr slightly improved ride but also aesthetics - from some angles they look great. But others they look too big for the car.

I would definitely be asking to swap the wheels over before collection day!

You could say downgrade but some might say upgrade...

...but there is no way IMO that having Geminis on it is going to hurt its residual value,in a few years time 99% won't have a clue what wheels were originally fitted.

Gone for the 18" Geminis.

Some may call me crazy, but I think they look better at the end of the day....

Seems most people I've spoken to agree too - one friend described the xtemes as looking like they've had some sort of nasty CAD accident, lol.

Obviously all these things are subjective though, but it just made sense for me, if I prefer the design, they're actually in better condition due to being less prone to kerbing, the ride and tyre cost are just an additonal benefit.

I was quite surprised what a difference it is actually, £75-£80 vs £112-£120 for decent premium tyres.  TBH, £75 is dirt cheap!  Pretty sure I pay more for my 17" ones on the Accord.

Crazy,I don't think so...If the delay in my ordered car makes me switch to something available quickly, then I would want to bin off the xtreme wheels, if that's what it came with.

They are lighter,

I'm quite intrigued by this statement and have to question whether it's correct as generally, unless you start looking at ultra light wheels a smaller wheel is lighter than a larger one..  on the basis that air is lighter than aluminium.

I'm pretty sure I saw a site of oem wheel weights but I can't find it now.

In addition to this of course, as tbh the straight up weight difference is negligible, the weight is more towards the outside of the wheel, meaning it takes more energy to accelerate it and stop it.  This is why wheel weight is more significant that other weight, it doesn't just have momentum, it has angular momentum.

So..  what are the weights?

Gemini’s are cast but Xtreme’s are flow formed. My Xtreme’s with PZero’s weighed 21.4 kgs. My Gemini’s with PS4’s weighed 21.9 kgs. Not a massive difference but it’s there. The construction of the Xtreme’s is superior IMO, the ride on them is great considering they are 19 inch wheels.

Here it is.

All good so far, just need time to have a play and get used to all the options on the infotainment unit.
