Annoying beep each time car is started

Featured Replies

I've had my 66 plate L&K 280 for a few weeks now, and it has always done this - press the start button with foot on the brake, and I get an annoyingly loud beep. I can't see any error messages or warning lights.

Is the beep warning me about something? Is there any way to turn it off?

Is it a proximity warning from one of the parking sensors?

Does it whether I'm at home or somewhere else, and before I've selected a gear. I don't get the parking sensor display come up on the screen.

Just been outside and had a play to see if I can find a pattern to the beeping.

It's a high-pitched beep that seems to come from the dashboard area. The parking sensor beeps are lower-pitched, and sound like they are in the middle of the car (presumably through all the speakers).

The beep happens after the dial needles have done their sweep, and as the "driver name " comes up on the screen, just after the L&K logo disappears.

It happens even if I just press the start button without my foot on the brake, so the car isn't actually starting.

It doesn't do it if I press the start button with the driver's door open.

One thing I have noticed - in the instrument panel display I get an icon that looks like the rear seats coming up where the trip mileage normally shows. It goes away after a few seconds.

FYI The rear seat icon is normal, so probably  not connected to your issue.

The sound you describe could be the warning chime. It warns of a few different things - eg when outside temperature goes to 4c or less, or when seat-belts aren't fastened on the move (or low fuel level IIRC). Sadly I don't have a definitive list of all the things that trigger it. But on mine there is always a maxi-dot message as well as the chime. Do you have VCDS or OBDEleven? If so, a scan could point out where any problems are.

OK, so at least I can rule out any problems with the rear seats/seatbelts.  Unfortunately I don't have any proper diagnostic kit, but I do have a Launch Creader, which works quite well with other cars that I've owned. My mate has borrowed it, will try it when he brings it back.

It does seem strange that it doesn't beep if I turn on the ignition with driver's door open, or put any warning message on the display.

The Icon tells you which rear seats are occupied and who has buckled up.

Presumably the icons change if someone is actually sitting in the seat?  I've not had anyone sitting in the back yet

Is anything visible via the infotainment menu?,  Vehicle > Status

Yes. They would show the seat belt fastened and warn if the seat was occupied but the seat belt wasn’t being used.

Just been out to check - nothing on the infotainment screen under "status", apart from telling me I had the door open. After I closed the door, nothing there at all.

Weirdly, this time it beeped when I turned on the ignition to check vehicle status - with the driver's door open.

Factory reset the infotainment system? At least you will know you are starting with a setup that should not beep, unless there is an error.

Turns out the beep is coming from the tracker that the previous owner installed (CAT5PLUS, with Tracker Network UK). I've found a user manual that states that the device beeps within 10 seconds of switching on the ignition to verify that it has detected the fob and disarmed.

I don't need a tracker, so I don't want to pay the company a subscription. Since I'm not paying a subscription, they won't talk to me.

I'm a bit concerned that the previous owner didn't inform them that he had sold the car, and at any time it could get activated as stolen, disabling my car.

How do I go about getting the tracker removed or permanently disabled, preferably without spending a fortune?

You would need to know where the tracker has been hidden so that it can be removed. Presumably it will not be obvious. You may need to contact the previous owner and ask if they know where that would be.

If you check the website for Catplus5 you will see that it is only a tracker and can not disable your car either by design or accident.

Get in touch with the previous owner.  They've likely not told you as they too didn't renew their subscription and didn't want the cost of hassle of sorting this out before selling on.  Could be an innocent non-disclosure but I doubt it's something you'd forget you had fitted to your car....

Or the previous owner/ a n other could use it to locate his old car and steal it back?

Easiest way to remove the tracker is find your local car thief who will be able to find it for you.

Maybe best just pay the subscription for the tracker since there is one fitted, but only if you really want the car back if ever stolen.

Good to know that it's just a tracker, and can't immobilise the car. I guess I might as well leave it where it is - as long as the beeping stops!

I bought the car from a non-franchised dealer, and got all 3 keys as well as both tracker fobs and the tracker registration document. I think the lack of de-registration was an oversight by the previous owner, or he may actually have thought he was doing me a favour. He paid for 5 years up front, so there's nearly 3 years subscription left to run. Shame it isn't transferrable!

The tracker subscription is actually as much as my insurance, so no chance of me paying it. If it gets nicked, I think on balance I'd rather not get it back.

I've emailed the  company, told them I've bought the car and don't want a subscription. Hopefully they will just de-register it, then I can leave the fob in the safe with the spare keys, and the car will stop beeping at me.

If they get funny about it, I'll just drive the car without the fob. They will soon get fed up with logging alerts and sending the police to my house, lol

3 keys, I got mine from new and was only supplied with two

Yes, 3 keys. 2 are all plastic, one has chromed metal ends.

Well that sounds like a trip back to the dealer then :)

It's possible that the previous owner paid extra to get the third key?  It's never really been used though - 2 of the keys have bits of fluff and stuff inside them, the third is like new.

I thought the Superb had three seat memory positions, each being associated to a key fob.

My MY17 L&K came with 3 keys (one posh chrome and two plastic). As far as I know it's standard.

FYI this isn't the case. Each key fob can be used to establish a driver profile and all three memory positions can be saved for that profile if you want. Not sure if this is why, but It does let you adjust the seat slightly while driving, for example to alleviate numb-bum type stress on a long journey (so I'm told:blush).
