Lost Skoda roof bar key - what to do?

Featured Replies

I've lost a bunch of keys containing my only copy of the key that locks my genuine Skoda roof bars. I'm told Skoda won't supply replacement keys, or even a replacement set of the locking end caps with matching keys. The locks have a code number stamped on them. Can anyone suggest how I can get my roof bars secured again? It would be a wicked waste to throw away the bars and buy an entire replacement.

Maybe find out who actually makes the bars and see if they will do a replacement key or new lock set?

Maybe these people can offer some help?

Thanks weasley! I've ordered a pair - little to lose...

These types of locks are not that secure as the key number is stamped on it, and any good locksmith would have a key in stock to fit.

In a similar scenario I drove off with my locking wheel nut key still on the nut, and of course lost it at some point. I took a photo of the nut, inverted it on the computer so it would look the same as the key and then checked the image against spares on the internet. Quicly found one and bought it, secondhand from a scrapped car. There are only a few different  shapes existing and a low life could easily obtain a complete set and take any of our wheels!

Delighted to report that my problem is resolved, less than 24 hours after I posted! As suggested, I ordered a replacement pair here and they arrived this morning and fit perfectly!

Never thought it could be done so quickly and cheaply - I'll think twice before despairing over other lost keys in the future. Thanks guys!

Glad to help. Just bear in mind though, anybody could look at your locks, get the number and order themselves a key, so never assume those locks are secure.  If I have anything of value on the roof (usually a bicycle) that I will be leaving unattended I add a cable lock through the roof rails.

Good suggestion - I have a python lock that would give some additional security. But roof bars should be okay for a touring holiday.

Maybe if replacement-keys.co.uk were a bit slower to ship, then my roof bars would be that much safer...

You could (after making a note of the number) deface the numbers with a punch or dremmel etc which would at least avoid the risk of a key being used by someone else...

Okay -  you could engrave the number somewhere  - perhaps under the roof bars

If you want to get depressed look on the internet and you can find "locksmith training tools" and kits for only a few pounds.

These are kits to open virtually any lock, and training kit typically come with a see through lock barrel to practice their skill.

Basically you could buy one of these and with a bit of practice open anything.

Only real security these days is the electronic key, eg the signal from the key fob which allows you to start the car; you can't actually stop them opening the car with the right bit of kit without damage.
