Power Steering warning light

Featured Replies

Afternoon All,

I have inherited a Fabia Mk1 2002 plate 2.0 16v from my son, and would like to get it back on the road for my wife, as there are not many of these left I have been told

It has been standing for over a year and as such needed new battery. Which we replaced. This has caused the power steering light to come on.  Researching this says that it should go out after a while of recharging - guess what , it didn't.  Ran engine for  45 mins  still no good. Checked fluid levels- needed slight top up, bled system as per instructions, still no joy.

Any Ideas,

If I have to get a replacement pump I am willing to fit it, however looking at the existing one most of the identifying numbers have been worn away, so I am left with the start and about 3 at the end of the M number.

I have seen many pumps advertised that all look the same ( plugs, mountings etc) but they have different numbers - so I guess they are slightly different specs.

Any idea what number I should be looking for and any other VW group car had them.

Sorry to ramble on but have been working on this for 2 weeks now and have run out of inspiration.

These are all of the engine codes for mk1 Fabia, which suggests your 2.0 isn't a 16-valve, or your 16 valve isn't a 2.0?

Check the strip fuses above the battery for cracks, the 50 Amp one is the PAS pump, position 3 counting from left to right as you look from standing in front of the engine bay.

Do these help to shed any light on my mystery ?vin.thumb.jpg.fd08bc69468e93d925da8e2ac7bc16f0.jpg794013669_fabiarearbadge.thumb.jpg.45c3bd08983b5494f4a1bf3b42ce9a63.jpg1842349286_engine1.thumb.jpg.1de94da7f5f79fd40d5c75dd45fc59c6.jpg

Much appreciate the help

That's odd. I wonder if someone has stuck that 16v badge on the engine cover.

Possibly an engine transplant, or a non-original engine cover. or 16V label, or I'm about to learn something....

The VIN should've helped, except the fifth character doesn't match any of the ones in my decode list for engine types:

A 1.0 l / 37 kW petrol engine
B 1.4 l / 50 kW petrol engine
C 1.4 l / 55 kW gasoline engine
D 1.4 l / 74 kW petrol engine
S 2.0 l / 85 kW petrol engine
F 1.9 l SDI / 47 kW diesel engine
H 1.4 l / 44 kW petrol engine
S 1.9 l PD TDI / 74 kW diesel engine
U 1.9 l PD TDI / 96 kW diesel engine
W 1.2 l / 40 kW petrol engine
Y 1.2 l / 47 kW petrol engine
Z 1.4 l TDI PD / 55 kW diesel engine

Is there a sticker on the cambelt cover, or in the boot, with an engine code on?

I will investigate tomorrow  its really raining here at the moment

Boot is full of tools from investigating the pump  - will clear tomorrow

Many thanks chaps

Is it worth having a word with local main stealer ?

Steve

I'd look at the steering column angle sensor....usually fail & throw up lights & very intermittent power steering....& I recon you have 2lt 8v......The Fabia MK1 was made in Elegance spec with the old VW 2lt 8v engine….heavy lump...but the car got side skirts & front & rear bumper add-ons etc...

It's a tool-eater 8V AZL, it's a TRW PAS pump so that's really all you need, however it may be the angle sensor rather than the pump so getting the codes read would be ideal.

I have one and it has no cosmetic stuff on it at all, just heated seats and hateful ASR over the comfort spec.
