Rear view reversing camera

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I'm installing a rear view reversing camera, the display is built into a rear view mirror.

Was wondering if anyone knew how to install this without losing the rain sensor, and would appreciate any advice on replacing the mirror. I've wired in the camera already which has power, and routed the video feed to the front of the car.

Thanks,

Mark

It depends on how the new mirror mounts.

The rain light sensor is a separate part so assuming the new mirror has the same mount as the original mirror, it'll just fit over the RLS without issue.

If it has a different mount, you'll need to get creative...

Indeed, if it has the same mount I'll be very grateful!

You need to carefully remove the trim of your mirror and the again carefully move your old mirror downwards. Look at HBA mirror replacement and there look for Lutz's video. The mirror is clipped on with strong spring clips.

Hi,

Sorry for slow response.

I've sorted the wiring and will take power from the inside light.  This runs 20W of bulbs so should be ok for a little screen I hope.

In order to keep the rain sensor, I need to affix the new mirror adjacent to the old one and retain the previous housing. Two questions:

1) Do you agree to mount the new mirror slightly to the passenger side rather than driver's side of centre?

2) Is quick setting epoxy the best adhesive to attach the small metal mount to the glass?

Thanks,

Mark

Morning, just off out to get the epoxy, any thoughts on previous post anyone?

Get special glass adhesive.

Does your current Skoda Octavia rear view mirror have an autodimming function? Does the new have this function?

^^^^^ this.

You can usually get it fairly cheaply from a glass fitters/glaziers - they use it alot to glue glass together, mounting hooks on glass shower doors, glass to tiles, fixing mirrors and splashbacks etc.  Its designed to withstand hot and cold, condensation etc. You'll get that on a windscreen. Plus, epoxy is great stuff but it tends to dry with a yellow, dirty colour and that wont look great. The adhesive intended for glass fixing drys clear.

Got some from local shop.

NB I'm actually in the wrong thread if a mod can move this to mk2 Octavia, but it doesn't really matter for the post.....

Finally got it installed, it's amazing how long it can take to get time to tinker with the car....

I wired the display unit into the interior lights rather than running cabling all the way to the battery and it seems to work fine. This also means that there are two fuses on the way to the display (in the rear view mirror).

In the end I left the assembly in place from the old mirror in order to retain the functionality of the rain sensors. The new mirror is mounted slightly off centre towards the passenger side but that's fine.

There is a little LED light that's always on, but I presume that it's designed not to flatten the battery...

Really pleased with the final result, £40 well spent!
