Mystery cause and symptom game!

Featured Replies

ok heres a really strange one for you out there that love a puzzle and a good guessing game!

The symptom: A strong smell of warm oil lasting for about a second only through the air vents. Its the same smell you get when you spill a bit of oil on the engine when filling up the oil and then when engine is warm you can smell it.

The cause: I only get this at one point on my journey home from work when booting it out of a large roundabout gaining speed at about 40-60mph in 3rd gear just after straightening up from the exit to the roundabout. But I get it everytime.

The theory: The exit of the roundabout at this speed is fairly tight so the car leans (on its leggy suspension) and I suppose the oil gets pushed to the right handside too. Now what I want to know is would this cause the oil to hit something hot and possibly leak out of the engine to cause the oil smell through the air vents, or is just the fact that the air flow through the car has changed and so picks up the warm engine smell.

I have tried recreating the conditions elsewhere but cant! Its not something

I am overly worried about (the oil light stays off) just one of those funny things that I know some of you guys might have an answer for!

Have you tried the same journey in a different car? perhaps the smell is actually not the car.

Is this the big roundabout next to "Fat Al's all-day cafe" ?
