Skoda Octavia mk1 1.9TDI 2001 4x4

Featured Replies

Hi. I got a problem with a gearbox, its damaged, i can buy a new one but the gearbox code is different, mine is - EWK, the one i want to buy is - ESW. What is the difference between them, does someone know? Will it fit on my car? The car is Skoda Octavia 2001, 1.9TDI 66kw engine, 4x4. The gearbox i want to buy is also 4x4 model (Skoda Octavia 2001 1.9TDI, but with 74kw engine.)

HI

I would imagine that it would have slightly different gear ratios in it as its from a slightly higher kw engine, (Don't quote me on that though). As long as its a 5 speed and 4x4 box it will fit though.

Hope that helps some what?

I don't have the numbers to hand, but the final drive is different between the 66 and 74kw tunes.

The EWK is a 5 speed box and the ESW is a 6 speed, the drive shafts are diiferent sizes 100mm & 108mm

Ok. So if i want an 6 gear gearbox. What i need is drive shafts from that car, what else? Probobly the whole gear unit/mechanism (or whatever it's called) right? I dont really care if the gear ratios will be a bit different.

You need to have a look through this https://skoda.7zap.com/en/cz/octavia/oct/2001-252/ and see in the different sections if there are any other different parts required, but at the basic level will be: Driveshafts, Gearchange mechanism, probably the gearbox mounts, the clutch might be a different size, the engine subframe might be different? So it won't be a straight swop

@Xetron5 @nige8021 - AFAIK the 6-speed box was only ever used with the DS3 calipers, so the front hubs and outer wheel bearings may need changed (and if so the front discs, calipers and pads need replacing, and you'll need to buy caliper carriers)

That is why I suggested the OP has a search in the parts listing to see if there were other differences

Okey. If i want an 6gear gearbox, then i need a lot more parts to fit it in my car, and that is not what i want at the moment. So the question is, what gearboxes will fit my car with a straight swap? I mean what models, what codes? Like i said, i dont really care about gear ratios, just need to know what gearboxes i need to look for. Thanks.

There are three EAG, ERW, EWN all from MK1 Octy or MK4 Golf/Bora

I found a gearbox with ERW code, but it comes from petrol car, 2.0 engine. but mine is 1.9tdi. It shouldn't be any problems, right?

Other than the final drive on the "new" box being wrong you mean? And I mean a lot wrong, not slightly wrong. the 2.0l petrol box will have a 32kph/1000 revs top; 5 speed turbo diesels are all 40 or 48kph/1000rpm.

The right question is, will i be able to put this petrol car gearbox on my diesel car? Im sorry for so many stupid questions 😅, but the thing is I need to find a spare gearbox as fast as possible, cause i really need to use the car. And to buy this gearbox i have to drive really far and I just dont want to pay the money for the gearbox that doesn't even fit on my car . Probobly i'm gonna change the gearbox when i repair mine.

So... I was able to put the petrol gearbox on my diesel car and it is working, the only problem is with rpm like you said. On diesel gearbox it was about 2000rpm when driving 90km/h, on this petrol gearbox it is 2500rpm. Anyway thanks guys for the info. Aprreciate it.🙂
