Activate my bloody side airbags over kurb

Featured Replies

A combination of the low sun, and sneezing at the wrong millisecond, and led my drivers side wheels over a mini central res island type thing. My drivers side duel roof lining airbag activated, so did my drivers seat bag. Obviously 2 trashed alloys & tyres.

Are these airbags common across the range so I can attempt to replace myself, or does anybody know of any issues I may have? I’ve got a Airbag tool for the lights.

Steering seems fine, so hopefully no extra damage.

The roof one is the curtain

Steering can't be fine according to your description. Do at least an alignment.

As for the airbags, unless you are very familiar with VCDS, let a garage take care of them.

Well alignment would be obvious, I was referring to a major steering issues.

Look, we have a forum so we can help each other, & DIY our own cars. I will try to DIY where I can, and if I run into a problem, I'll garage it.

So, can you be helpful on my issue?

I think that I have read somewhere that once airbags have been deployed then the controller must be replaced, do some googling which will probably lead you back to a thread on this forum with good advice.

I would find your part numbers using 7zap.com or similar, then google the part number or search Ebay for it and the results should indicate what other vehicles use the same part number.

I would imagine that they are common across the range, if you do need to replace the controller then the revision number might be important as well as the part number.

I had a similar collision in my MK1 after an eye operation, thankfully airbags did not go off but I was convinced I had wrecekd both wheels and tyres, the front tyre was destroyed and the rim deformed but it was good alloy and I managed to straighten it, the rear rim and tyre were OK to my surprise. I could tell the tracking was out as the steering wheel was misaligned and I had a deformed track rod end and a slight kink at the inner ball end of the track rod, if you rotated it it made an eccentric movement, I retracked it with a string line and replaced both some months later when I returned to my UK workshop.

Its my experience that the Skoda suspension is very strong indeed and if the steering wheel is still central, teh car tracks and drives correctly I would check the wheelbase dimensions side to side and then just keep an eye on tyre wear, I have my own tracking guages so its no cost to check.

Excellent advice, thanks. I'm gonna get the part no off the car.

I've now go the small issue of the crappy locking nut not working, and the car being 25 miles from home. And then I only have 1 spare wheel, so have to hunt for a 18 size rim to get home

I'd check if your insurance covers towing/recovery - if it does get it towed back home. You don't know how much damage is done underneath yet, so it's safer. You may also find that the engine won't start until the airbag system has been repaired. I had a collision two years ago where the three front airbags and all the seatbelt pretensioners fired and the engine was locked out from starting due to the collision. When the insurance company declared it a category D writeoff I didn't dig too much deeper into it and sold it for salvage. You'll see something like the message below on a VCDS scan:

On that point, check if any seatbelt pretensioners were triggered in the collision: if the driver's airbag fired, there's a good chance the seatbelts did too and they will also have to be replaced.

The side airbag is probably unique to the Superb given that it has to fit the specific interior of that car, and may even be different between Twindoor and Combi. The front may be shared across other Skoda models: do a search for people doing steering wheel upgrades - it often comes up in that context.

If you have comprehensive insurance cover I'd get a quote from a repairer to bring it up to scratch and see what the insurance company is willing to do.

Its progress in one way that modern vehicles are strong enough to cope with such an impact without (we think in this case) suspension damage but not progress that the safety systems render the vehicle a write off if its more than a few years old.

In my humble opinion, I think the insurance route is the best option... By the time you have swapped out all the airbag parts, replaced the damaged wheels, examined the steering/suspension, arranged a tow home and perhaps a replacement car (As most policies do), It will most likely come to a fair chunk of dough! Unless you don't have any NCD or are not covered, I think the hike in premiums next time round will be better then paying for the work. (Look around next time and even though your insurer may hike up the cost, others will be willing to snaffle their business).

Wheels/tyres will cost hundreds, alone and airbag deployment will almost certainly put the repair cost in to the thousand or so area. Add the potential for underlying damage and its simply not worth the bother. I had a relatively small side impact once and it knocked out the power steering pump. Again, hundreds of pounds of work to replace. Seemed ok at first but just was not "Right". The dealer who repaired it, noticed the issue, and it was fixed, along with the rest of the insurance claim. That is aside from physically having to undertake the work yourself, too and/or trust the garage who does the work. Insurance approved workshops have a minimum of two years warranty or so I have been informed.

Well I got it home 25 miles for £65 which was a good start.

Starts fine, drives okay as it seems

Seatbelt has gone yes

Steering bag did not blow

Headline drivers side which covers from and back did blow. 1 bag

Drivers seat bag did blow. Leather heated seat too

It’s was until this morning a taxi. Not a chance I’m going through the insurance.

I’m just about to buy a Superb 3. So this one I can have a go at in my own time.

  • Author

Well I got the curtain bag code. It's ex20060139. Google sends me here. Shares part number with a Golf,  a Toyota Yaris, Prius, and a few Mercs. Safe to assume thats the one?

I appreciate all of your advice. I’m now driving my Skoda Superb 3, so I’ll be heading over there soon.

In the mean time I’m here to get the 2 back to a roadworthy state.

Can anybody answer the last question? My airbag part numbers seem to fit other cars, I assume they will fit mine too?

Air bags are fairly generic and used in many different models. Although the part numbers may be the same the connector plugs and the wiring pins/ wire colours may be different and specific to each car so worth inspecting first

...Had to laff at the taxi  part... I had my door damaged by a taxi (Minicab actually) Drivers passenger, who swung open the rear door just as my student was passing, cracking the mirror and denting the door. Typical cabby, trying to blame everyone but himself! My student as he was a learner, me as I was his instructor, his passenger as he was not looking... Took around a month until his own insurance would admit he was to blame as it was HIS passenger, who by definition, was in his cab, his insurance, his liability! Never once known a cabby to admit fault in a motoring collision or driving situation. Perhaps it is inbuilt protection against hefty insurance hikes! 😅

Curtain airbag for right side is specific to the Superb but appears to be shared between Twindoor and Combi: http://www.oemepc.com/tvn_result/search/tvn/3T0880742

Driver's seat side airbag is also specific to the Superb: http://www.oemepc.com/tvn_result/search/tvn/3T0880242B

This means at least the two driver's side seatbelt tensioners will have fired, possibly all four: the control system doesn't distinghuish between them. Confirm with VCDS.
