Garage - Wrong Locking bolts

Featured Replies

Around the start of the year I had to replace a rear tyre on my car unexpectedly, a few days later I had the following rear replaced to match up at national tyres near me. On having 2nd tyre replaced the fitter informed me that a locking bolt was missing, I signed some paperwork to say I was aware etc and he fitted the tyre. I ordered a set of 4 bolts (different) and at the start of the following month, I had the front two tyres replaced so that all matched up. On coming back for the front I gave the fitter the new replacement bolts and said fit them on the offside rear where the one was missing. I was handed back my original locking wheel nut, the new replacement locking wheel nut and 3 old bolts that had been removed which I have kept should anymore go missing.

Fast forward, home DIY replacement of pads and disks.

To my dismay after things not going as expected - on all 4 wheels, there is one installed new replacement bolt (not really bothered) but, the other three bolts on every wheel do not match the two locking wheel nuts I have! no original locking nuts present. So in essence I have 12 matching locking wheel nuts fitted that I don't have the locking nut for and 4 that I do. I am planning on attending tomorrow first thing in the morning to national tyres where they were fitted and going from there. To note my car has not had the tyres off in between fitting and now,

Any help or advice would be appreciated

I hope you give them what for!

Too late now but for the future.

Anytime someone else fits wheels always check right after the wheel nuts and locking nuts to be sure with the tools that you carry in the car you can change a wheel.

That way not only do you know the wheel nuts torqued correctly, you also know you have the security bolt / nut socket.

Huh, I'm confused by this. Normally there is only one locking nut/bolt per wheel, the other 4 (or 3 on a 4 bolt hub) are just plain nuts or bolts

The numbers in this tale just don't add up. Why buy 4 new locking bolts and only ask to have one fitted?

from memory of the original story:

Lost locking nut for originals so got them to bodge it off and supply a new one.

Replaced other rear one to match the tyres.

Replaced the fronts to match.

Now discovered that new key only fits the original replaced bolt and the others are different.

Note: I have no idea where the 12 bit comes from.

To say I'm not the most savvy when it comes to cars would be an understatement, I was under the assumption that each wheel had 4/5 locking nut bolts. Quickly did I learn today, thankfully the fitter found it rather amusing. As a passing comment on my way out, I said I'm off to sort the brakes to have his colleague freeze frozen with shock.

Despite the above statement I have managed to successfully replace all brake pads around, the discs at the rear and not go through the front living room of the house at the bottom of the road. I've had to admit defeat with the front discs as they are f*cking pain to get the calliper bracket off to remove the disc with your simple on the drive workshop, I'll have to go my local garage and have them fit the discs purchased.

After three attempts at reading this post I am still none the wiser and have decided to move on with my life.

Good luck, whatever this issue is or was.

Me too, I'm at a complete loss as to the number of locking wheel nuts and tyres involved here!

It is slightly worrying that something so simple as a locking wheel nut can phase the OP, who then goes on to fully service all four brakes :D

Glad it got sorted either way though!
