Front Fog Lights LED VCDS Fault

Featured Replies

Hello

I wonder if anyone knows how to clear the dash warning when you change the fog lights to LED. I unerstand that the CANBUS thinks the bulbs are gone due to the lower current of the LEDs Ive fitted.

I have bought a VCDS and the scan shows :-

01500 - Bulb for Fog-Lamps; Right (L23)

010 - Open or Short to Plus

Freeze Frame:

Fault Status: 01101010

Fault Priority: 4 Fault

Frequency: 254

Reset counter: 232

Mileage: 106445 km

Time Indication: 0

Date: 2013.04.11

Time: 16:23:25

Freeze Frame:

Term 15 On

Voltage: 14.10 V

ON

ON

Term 50 Off

OFF

OFF

Then the same for the left bulb 01496

Im new to VCDS so apologies if its really simple.

Any pointers ppreciated

VCDS won't help I'm afraid.

You can either add load resistors to fool the bulb check or find a VCP/ODIS-e owner to reprogram the lighting config in the BCM EEPROM.

I thought LEDs were glaringly bad as fog lights and that was why they are conventional ones instead.

It's more the projection of the bulb than the colour (as far as I understood, anyway). I've not looked too far into it mind...

Same as fog really then...

Hi All

Cheers for the info on VCP/ODIS-e , saved me looking further 🙂

Not a big problem to ignore the dash warnings.

As to the fog function , you know Ive never thought about that.

The reason I changed them over was because the standard bulbs didn't last long.

They come on when cornering at night so they get lots of switch on and offs.

I cant remember the last time I drove in fog here in Dorset.

Next time I do I will note what difference they make (and drive slow)

That suggest something is wrong. I have done nearly 140k in 3 yetis, and never had a single bulb fail!

Agree with Ken's comment above.
My previous Yeti was nearly 7 years old when I sold it and the only bulbs that ever got changed were one DRL bulb that failed at 4 months old, one brake light bulb, and the headlight bulbs (H4) to the better Osram ones. Even those lasted until I sold it.

LED technology must have improved. the front foglights on the higher specification Kodiaq's and Karoq's are LED...

Lets be honest, modern foglights are more decorative than functional.  The foglights on my pre-FL Yeti were some of the best I have used, because they weren’t little trinkets down under the bumper.

What makes fog lights more or less effective in fog is beam pattern rather than size (or lack thereof) of lens. The best I've ever used (both range and controlling dazzling retro-reflection) are the parabolic units in the Octavia mk1, and they're also the ones with the smallest (area) lenses and indeed reflectors.

If anyone gets a can bus friendly set of these for the Yeti and they work well, please pass on the info. I would be keen to give them a go

Try auto-bulbs direct.  They aren't the cheapest (e.g they are cheaper from Aliexpress, etc) BUT...they have obviously found a reputable supplier with some level of quality control as I haven't had any issues with the bulbs I've bought from them.  When ordering new, rear LED indicator bulbs for my Superb, ABD were out of stock so I ordered direct from China...bulb failure within 10 months.

If these are the correct ones for your year, etc then they are on sale at the mo:

EDIT:  I have their own branded H8 fogs and have had no issues.  Nice output/spread of light but I actually can't recall ever needing to switch on my front fogs since having them so can't comment on 'in anger' performance.  They do a good job for cornering on dark roads etc and they also suit my DRL's when in reverse (which TBH is the main reason anyone uses them )

Great info, thank you very much.

Additionally and to clarify, is the fog light and drl on a pre FL yeti the same bulb? Anyone?

No; the housing is split in two with a lamp in each section.
