Bug Splats!

Featured Replies

Washed the Superb yesterday – covered in bug splats on the front, took me ages to get rid of them 🙄

What tips/tricks do others use for getting rid of bug splats?

ivan.

Valet Pro citrus glue and tar remover for the really stubborn stuff.

Though I will first add some Bilt Hamber Surfex HD to my snow foam solution which usually does the trick If not then I’ll apply some VP citrus pro.

Valet Pro also sell a bug remover which I’m going to try next.

Good suggestions above and I agree with them. I've found that decent preparation can also help - the smoother the paint, the less hard the bugs stick (in theory anyway:)). It's quite a bit of work though, so might not be for everyone.

Twice a  year I take mine back to the clear-coat. Wash as usual, then deep clean using tar and iron remover (Oblitarate and Korrosol for me, but other products are just as good). Decent paint cleanser (eg Bilt Hamber) gets all of the remaining wax off. Then correct the paint if needed (clay, light cutting polish). Once it is completely smooth, use a good sealant or wax (I use Soft 99 Fusso) to protect it. Then top up the protection every few weeks - I use Meguiar Ultimate wax or Quik-Wax - or a quick detailer with each wash will add a thin top up layer.

There is loads of good advice on the car care section if you want to go down this road.

@BriskodaJeff How long does it take you to carry out those tasks?

Too long! To get through the whole lot in one go is a (very) long day, easily 9 hours plus. I only made that mistake once and I really don't recommend it. I couldn't walk the next day...

Now I split the car into four sections and get round it over a few weekends. I do the front end to the start of the front doors as one session, the sides as one session each and the roof and boot as one session. Each section takes me about 2-3 hours, but I'm not in a hurry when I do it. You can even do it one panel at a time if that works better for you. It's become an obsession bit of a hobby for me TBH, and (hopeless car-cleaning addict self-justification warning ahead) it's only twice a year so it's not even slightly obsessive at all. Not a bit. Even slightly. No-sir. Not at all. No way. No how. Not me.
