2010 1.6 TDI rpm specific vibrations

Featured Replies

Hi!

The car in question is a 2010 4x4 1.6 TDI estate with 122 000 km on it. It drives fine but as the weather has become warmer there are these strange resonance feeling high frequency vibrations going through the car when the engine is under load from about 2000-2500 rpm. From 2500 to 4000 rpm it's completely smooth and the only thing I have noticed at lower rpm is light vibrations from time to time rattling some panels in the trunk at just above idle rpm. The strange thing is that the mid range rpm vibrations are dependent on ambient temperature. It wasn't at all a problem during the winter here in Norway (below freezing temperatures), it starts after like 10-15 minutes of driving if there's rather chilly like today (7°C) and if it's 15+ °C it's there right from the get go.

Has anyone experienced something similar or got a clue about what is going on? :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated

This is going to sound silly ...... is it definitely a vibration or noise?  I be noticed in my Oct 3 something from about 2400 to 3400 rpm but unsure whether it's a noise or vibration ...... and only in 5th & 6th

I was wondering exactly the same thing and I think it's a combination in my case. This weird sound fills the cabin, I figured it was a product of resonance. The sound in some way reminds me of the induction noise you get with an open air filter. It's mostly a problem for me in 5th and 6th too because that is when I stay in that rpm band for any duration during high load. Also noticeable in 4th, but not annoying in 1st, 2nd or 3rd because it just pulls right through the rpm range then.

It's frustrating because it's hard to define the problem. I almost wish it was worse so it would be easier to diagnose. I have a feeling a mechanic will just come up with the "no issue found" BS when testing it. I know one thing; it wasn't like this before.

God we're on the same wavelength :D

I thought it it sounded like induction roar as well, doesn't do it 1-3 gear (I thought because it just drove through the band quicker as well) noticeable in 4 but not bad.

So on the Oct 3 section of this forum someone else has a similar ish issue that they thought came about after a haldex oil change ..... the/ a garage had mentioned dual mass fly wheel potentially an issue and the vibrations travelling down the prop shaft to the rear wheels.  I'm not convinced, I've had my Haldex done about 15k ago and it's only in the last 1000 miles I've noticed this issue/sensation.  also I'd expect it all gears.

What I did notice this week is accelerating on full lock that there is a slight squeak/roar from the rear so I was wondering a wheel bearing possibly .... also if I dip clutch at speed there is a bit of a whirring noise around 65mph.

If its a wheel bearing, the noise should remain when you put the car in neutral (or push the cluch). Just drive into 5th gear till this sound occurs, and press the clutch. Car will slow down off course, but if the sound instantly dissapears its not a bearing but something with the engine/turbo/drivetrain.

The whirring stays when dipping clutch or going to neutral at 65 ish, the vibration/noise stops as soon as you ease off but as above only apparent between 2400rpm and 3409rpm in 4th and 5th when accelerating
