VRS SE clonk on front n/s help please

Featured Replies

Ok I’m currently on the ferry to Bilbao and my car has developed a serious clonk over speed bumps and general bumps on the road. It stops under braking. It’s been pouring down with my journey down from Cumbria so just checked wheel nuts and continued. The clonk disappears when braking and there appears to be some play in the wheel but without dumping the contents of my boot and getting the jack out I’m no wiser. Smooth roads nothing. I’m going to try and get it checked out in Bilbao but I know the mechanics are going to poke my eyes out on price. What is the worst that could happen if I added 700ks to my journey on hopefully smooth roads?

I should have said my console bushes were uprated Cupra ones and have done 100k miles so I’m guessing a those. Are they something that can rattle on a while or do they need done ASAP? I can get work done reasonably locally 700km away in Portugal

I'd be surprised if the bushes are worn out, if they're bad you should be able to easily see the damage with a torch.

What would be your best guess for the noise?

Drop links, if the bushes are ok then it's not serious and can wait until you get home, you'll just have to put up with the irritating noise.

Great thanks, I’ll have a look tomorrow. If it’s the console bushes I’m guessing that’s more serious and needs sorted ASAP?

Yes, worn bushes allowing excessive movement would render the car unsafe.

Cupra bushes are solid so it's very unlikely that they would show any wear or damage at all, even after 100k.

Thanks again, the car has done 148k and I’ve had it from new and I know I’ve never changed the drop links.

Bingo.

Drop links make an irritating noise but are not unsafe, finish your holiday and change them when you get home.

Yeah, that's pretty bad news.  How long have you owned this car?

Ok, you need to get that fixed yesterday.

Suggest you use a SEAT dealer since they are common in Spain.

Just back in, what a day. Yes owned since new but had it mot’d last week in my absence and the guy who took it had the calliper off for a cv boot. Today Took it to Skoda in Santander, absolute jokers. Said it damaged the calliper, if it’s paint knocked of then ok it did, said the bolt elongated the threaded part and wanted to replace shockers and discs and pads which were done less than 1k ago. They said it would take till end of day tomorrow. I walked out, went to a scrappy and replaced the bolt, they didn’t even charge me.

Good work! Guess you'll be taking it somewhere else for MOT next time?

Yes that’s 2 garages in the last 2 years struck off for something as simple as a cv joint gaiter, not good.
