1.0 TSI DMF?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone.

could you please listen to the sound in the video attached and help me diagnose what the issue might be?

I have been hearing metallic sound for the past 6 months or so but the dealership insists that all is as it should.

symptoms: loss of power, vibrations (idle and acceleration), clunking when shifting between gears and jerky drive overall.

car’s one year old with 18000km

thanks

Does it definitely have a DMF? I'd be suprised for such a small Petrol engine.

Does the noise change at all if you put your foot on the clutch?

It doesn't sound particularly like a DMF, more like something loose that's vibrating in the engine bay area.

A DMF rattle would be most noticable at idle where the engine is at its "roughest", where in that video it seems like it happens at some certain rpm ranges.

Try getting someone else to hold the engine at that rpm where it makes the noise most, and have a look round the engine bay. Be VERY careful of moving parts (fans/belts etc) though.

Edit: i do like the sound & feel of the 1.0 though, kinda wish they were out when i got mine!

Thanks for your response.

I forgot to mention that it is a DSG.

The sound is indeed not there when the engine is idling.

I will follow your suggestion and check for any parts in the engine bay that are loose.

@sfnj3

You have a warranty, make sure the Dealership has the Master Tech checking out properly your car.

From what you describe all is not well.

Best get your car dropped off with them and a Courtesy car the same as yours provided so you can compare it from yours.

Thanks, I have taken the car to the dealership in two different cities and they insist that all is well. They have compared it to a Golf and a Polo with the same engine and my car vibrates significantly more (Golf vibrated too but was barely noticeable) but they refuse to see any problem. They did not even bother to lift it up and check it. As a side note, the official VAG dealership garage in my country was voted last in customer satisfaction last year and is known to employ inexperienced mechanics. I have been trying to get them to check and diagnose the faults for almost a year now.

Here is a another video of gear change clunks and excessive engine movement I have experienced:

I appreciate your replies and advice.

Loss of power could be a dodgy turbo or waste gate.

Is the jerkyness a backlashy jolt or severe engine braking?

Engine movement could be engine mounts. On the 1.0 they can be as chatty as on the 1.2 but not so backlashy from what I've seen around here.

This is definitely a warranty issue. If you are losing power it sounds as if it's probably connected to a turbo issue, likely to do with the wastegate. I'm not a VAG trained tech, but I've worked on many many turbo cars both petrol and diesel over the years and any good tech will be able to diagnose that problem. Has the car been scanned for faults by a dealership? It sounds like your dealers are totally incompetent or completely uninterested in their jobs.

Regarding the clunky, noisy gearchanges. I'm afraid many of the dsg's do that. Mine was very bad too and seemed to defy all attempts to fix it, and then I had the slipping clutches too! Quality on some Skoda designs is not what it used to be.

Is it a characteristic of a 3-pot engine design? My sister-in-law has a Mk11 Fabia with a 3-pot engine and on idle I can feel an engine vibration in the cabin.

The whole vibration thing is very subjective. When it's been very cold (below 0) the engine vibrated the cabin quite a bit until a while of driving, i'm assuming that's the rubber in the engine mounts warming up.

When it's warm or in warm weather, its barely noticable that the engine is actually running. The 1.0 was a more consistent but overally a more pleasant drive, no weird RPM boosts, idle was consistent always at about 950 rpm, no random switching between 650, 750, 850, 1100 depending on how the car felt. And it also sounded a bit nicer. No turbo lag either, though that seems a problem on mine with a boost leak somewhere.

Mine does not vibrate even when cold although upon setting off cold it does feel a bit strange surgy feeling but normal after 100m. It sounds like a metal heat shield or something to me mine definitely doesn’t rattle as above have a look around holding something against all bits close to the noise see if you can deduce what it is.

Quick update:

Car is booked in for next Friday to look into the vibration (floor, steering wheel) and the loss of power symptoms.

Chief mechanic at the dealership told me that the most probable cause behind it is the flywheel. Car has done only 19000km

I will post an update.

Any news? As far as i'm aware, these small TSI engines do not have Dual Mass Flywheels, they are solid Single Mass Flywheels.
