Rear driver's door won't open now

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

I've had a problem on my 2004 octavia L&K estate for some time where the two rear doors won't always lock or unlock with the remote key fob. I've been able to lock them manually so it hasn't really been as issue, however although I can still open and manually lock the rear passenger door, the rear driver's door  now won't open from either inside or out. When I pull the inside handle the door button lifts but it feels like the lock motor is trying the pull the handle back again.  I've also noticed the alarm LED next to the driver's door button no longer flashers to indicate the alarm is activated (can't find the location of a fuse to check it).

I've been looking at the Forum for a solution but I'm confused as to where the fault lay. Is it an alarm fault or a door fault?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Regards

Geoff.

The LED on the driver's door is usually caused by a failed microswitch in the driver's door locking mechanism. I think there is a guide for DIY repair, but the other common solution is to buy a new door lock for about £20.

As for the rear doors - you could try taking the door cards off and lubricating all the moving parts, but I think that's also likely to need new locking mechanisms to solve. To open the deadlocked door you might be able to persuade it to unlock by pulling the inside handle while pressing the unlock button on the driver's door repeatedly.

If you listen closely by the locked rear door, can you hear the motor getting power? If so then its the deadbolt has over shot and wont come back.

Theres loads posts on this issues and reminders from me on how to be gentle to get the lock unit to open without needing a hammer :)

If it sounds like the unit isnt getting power then its probably a broken wire in the loom, most likely in the bellows from car frame to door. Or a corroded multiplug.

I've had several similar issues on my 2002 octavia. Most of them was due to bad eletric cables. They break after much use and age where the door connects to the car. That has led to problems with the electric windows, remote lock etc. One of the wiring issues was tricy to find, but it was just at the spot of where the cables has to move when one open and close the door. On my car I also had to change the driver door lock mechanism 20$ on ebay, a bit fiddley to change but there are good guides out there. I'm a bit unsure why your door now is stuck but the inner part of the door and the handle there has problably been disconnected from the wire, has happend to me during winter. Ice locks up and get it in strange positions so it falls out when the wire get loose from the ice.
