Flywheel or not??

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've recently purchased a superb estate (2015 2.0 tdi) car has done 73k, drove beautifully on the test drive and ever since, until its first motorway journey..

Just north of 70 the entire car (and steering wheel) starts to shake horrendously, if you back of the throttle and coast it disappears completely. Also if I boot it right up it seems to power through it but if I sit at 70 and just ease on the throttle the shaking comes back, checked it in 4th, 5th and 6th and it's always there.

Is this the flywheel? Seems a common problem after a bit of googling but looking for a more definitive answer.

Appreciate any feedback

Check tyre pressures, tyres and wheel balance on all wheels/tyres first.

Thanks AG Falco

I've played with the tyre pressures and not really felt a difference. I'd ruled out the balance as when I lift off all wobble/vibration disappears completely, would it not be there all the time?

Get the CV joints  checked. Could also be a wheel bearing

Is your car 2WD or 4WD out of interest ?

Last November I hit a belter of a pothole and was getting a bad vibration when accelerating up the dual carriageway.  This also coincided shortly after with my car breaking down on the driveway with a failed clutch concentric cylinder.  I had been noticing the clutch was snatchy for a week or two before the clutch failed and this was around the time I hit the pothole.

However, when the clutch failed and was then replaced the main source of vibration was all but gone.   I since put this down to the clutch slipping when accelerating due to fluid contamination.

However I have since noticed that I still have a slight vibration when accelerating. around the 50 - 70 MPH range.  When I back off I occasionally get a resonance coming through as the car slows down on engine braking.    I have since tried a Hunter 4 wheel alignment and a Hunter Roadforce Wheel balance which have improved things but still not 100%.   The roadforce would also have picked up any buckled wheels but all was ok.

When the clutch was changed I decided not to change the dual mass flywheel as this was a further £500 - the Skoda tech said it visually appeared ok with no apparent reason to change it given the mileage and no reported issues beforehand.  My car has done 48K and I don't hammer my car so would like to think my DMF has plenty of life left.

Other thoughts could be resonance via the propshaft, I have read some 4x4 users reporting this.

Car is due at the dealer soon for its cambelt so I will ask them to comment on the vibration during the follow on road test.

All this happened last year within 2 - 3 weeks so it was hard to differentiate between what was the clutch issue and possible pothole damage.  I am just hoping I am not in for a DMF failure as that would be the icing on a rotten cake....I haven't had much luck with my Superb in terms of failures and repairs...

Mine also does this at 70 in sixth, had the wheel alignment done and propshaft checked, car has done 97k

Thanks for all the messages, had the balancing checked this morning and the rear passenger wheel has buckled, it's been balanced as best they can and the car is now free from 70-100 without any signs of wobble or loud vibration.

KPH obviously.

Some places can straighten buckled alloy wheels.

DMF suffers from poor clutch control, especially when starting from stationary.

You can get a noise when you start moving.

I'd say it was mph considering he's in the UK.

How did you fix the buckled alloy @Telfordskoda15?

So would I, but don't know if he would want to admit to this. 😉
