Oil Change

Featured Replies

Hi,

My Superb 3 says its due an oil change at 45,000 miles, is this a garage job or can a competent person complete this?

If so what parts are needed and what spec should the oil be?

Is it easy enough to locate and replace the oil filter.

Thanks In advance.

Tony

Should be possible to do yourself, as long as you have tools to grip and remove filter, and appropriate spanner for the sump plug

Will need new filter, new sump plug, and the oil

The old oil should go to a licenced collector (normally a place at council recycling centre)

The grade of oil depends on your car engine, and if on fixed or variable service

eg petrol might be VW504 or if newer with GPF then use VW508

When we're GPFs introduced. Would a 2015 1.4 150 have one?

No. They were only introduced in mid 2018 to comply with WLTP regs.

You probably shouldn't use VW504 or VW508.

Franchised UK Skoda dealers all use VW507 for all models and engines, regardless of what it left the factory with, whether its petrol or diesel, on fixed or variable servicing etc.

My MY18 Kodiaq was built with VW508 (0W20), which I suspect is all about ensuring the vehicle meets the stricter WLTP emissions standards, but at its first service was filled with VW507.

When I queried this the technician said they use the same oil (Quantum / Castrol 5W30) which meets the VW507 standards for all Skoda models. It's the only oil they stock.

Luckily it's readily available from a few Skoda dealers via eBay for a good price, £25 for 5 litres delivered to your door...

You don't tell us which engine you have.

The oil filter on the 2.0 TDI is now accessed from underneath, there have been a few reports on here about how access to it is much more restricted that it was when it was at the top of the engine.

@silver1011 Just wondering, how can you tell that? Was there a sticker or something under the bonnet?

I had a bit of a strop with Skoda UK customer services when they couldn't tell me which oil was in my car. The sticker on the slam panel and the recommendation they were making contradicted each other.

In the end they had to consult their technical department who confirmed that the car was filled with VW508.00 (0W20) from the factory, but that their recommendation for topping up was VW507.00 (5W30).

I went against their advice and bought a 1 litre container of VW508.00 to top up. Now it's had its first service and is now running VW507.00 it's easier and cheaper for oil, as VW508.00 is actually quite hard to find.
