Cracked tyre walls

Featured Replies

I've noticed that my tyre walls are cracking i don't think its to bad as there only 3 years old and ive plenty of tread left but id like a second opinion, the garage had put them down as an advisory on my mot.

They may be 3 years on your car, but i suspect they are not 3 years old.

There is a code on the tyre wall to tell you how old they actually are and if stored (at tyre fitters for eg) incorrectly or in unsuitable conditions this is not good for longevity.

To me the cracks along the bottom of the tread look bad. I had cracks in my tyre wall and this is not uncommon but i didn't have any cracks below the tread.

If you can afford, I would replace asap, especially if the car is used for higher speed driving.

As it is an mot advisory you are going to have to purchase some sooner or later anyway (unless selling or scrapping) so you may as well get some now knowing you are as safe as can be on the road.

What size are they?

@storeman dan  look at the 4 digit number for the age, will be something like 2914, first 2 are week number (1-52) second 2 are year, so this example would be July 2014

The life of tyres is dependant on temperature variations, direct sunlight, loadings (how much carried in car), pressure etc

As @Tilt has said, post the size (the numbers on side) and maker and type and someone is bound to offer advice

My vehicle was serviced in March and I was advised to replace my Winter tyres ASAP due to cracking around the treads which appears to be far less severe than you have. Definitely don't have any on the tyre sidewall.

Just had my Mot and received an advisory for slight cracking on two of my tyres near the treads, but told durings the handover to replace soonest. Again this cracking appears to be less severe than you have posted.

All tyres have over 4mm of tread, are cleaned and treated before being stored under a protective cover on a 'tyre tree' in my shed.

Currently looking to replace both sets with a set of 'All Season'.

There are radial cracks across the root of the tread grooves as well.

I moved a trailer not so long ago that had tyres from the 60's that only fitted 2 different vehicles and have not been made for decades, they were much much worse than that but surprisingly had not even lost 1psi of pressure in all that time.

It was unladen and I drove very slowly and replaced them with something that was persuaded to fit (the rims were very narrow but large diameter).

I would not want to drive on your tyres because they probably have very little grip, I certainly would not want to drive at high speeds laden or overloaded with them or if they were underinflated.

I want one...........How long does it take to grow a set of tyres???  :giggle:

No idea why they call it that as Tyre Hoopla would be more appropriate, if a little bit risky!
