Excessive wear on brake discs?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I was washing the Superb yesterday evening and noticed that some of the brake discs appear to have a bit more wear than I would expect. The drivers side front is the worst (pictured) you can easily feel the grooves when running your finger along the disc surface. The passenger side front is almost perfect with very little scoring while both rears are similar to the divers side but not as bad.

I've seen one or two comments that hill hold can cause a bit of extra wear but the fact the passenger side is almost un affected is a bit puzzling (unless it was replaced before I bought the car which I think is unlikely). I have the car about 4 months myself and admittedly when doing checks on the car before buying I didn't pay too much attention to the discs and I've had it washed at car valet places since I bought it until yesterday so didn't get down too close to the wheels.

Car is just over two years old and has approx 27k miles/43k km about 4k miles or so of which I've out on since buying it.

Just wondering if it is excessive and something to be concerned about (or whats causing it) or if it's reasonable wear?

Thanks.

Thanks, I did come across that thread but it was mostly rear disc wear, my front drivers side disc is the worst of the lot and almost no wear on the passenger side with visible wear on the rears also but not as bad as the front drivers side.

My guess is that its the same issue though and due to the auto hold which while annoying that discs wear faster its reassuring that it's not a major issue. The brakes are working perfectly I don't really have a feel for how long the discs will last with the current rate of wear.

Brake wear threads come up with depressing regularity, latest is an Octavia iii which gets through pads every 13k. I have witnessed all these reported symptoms on all our Skodas, fabias, Octavia and starting to see initial stages on a new Superb.

Its simply calipers not floating or pistons sticking.

Mostly down to the poor quality brake components used by Skoda, also no maintenance is ever carried out on the brakes during servicing. They really need cleaning and checking for free movement every 2yr/20000 miles or more if excessive dust is evident.

Pretty much, the disks used on Superb are rubbish quality.

In your case, the worn disk indicates the brake is binding on that side, you need to report under warranty, don't be fobbed off with the wear and tear clause. Its abnormal and caliper is sticking on, point out the side is perfectly fine.
