Not different cars. Should that even need to be said? Embarrassingly stupid. 

Also the so called expert forgot to mention the heavier SUV would need bigger discs and calipers which add yet more weight to the unsprung weight hence making it even harder for the springs/dampers to cope without air suspension or adaptive dampers.:nod:

  • Have to say I love my 19" wheels and (in my opinion of course) make the car look far better.     Ride is fine too, being able to switch from comfort, to normal, to sport varies it up a bit.

Just a couple of points out of personal experience to make you less angry (maybe):

1) Switching from an average 18" stock tire (Potenza S001) to a top 19" aftermarket one (PS4S) turned my previous Golf GTI into a significantly quieter car despite the bigger size and shorter profile (much to my surprise), while at the same time significantly better handling too.

2) All the smaller wheel cars that I've driven or been driven in (some as low as 13") in the last 6 months are a significantly WORSE ride than my DCC Sportline on 19" when on Comfort or even Normal. Yes you read that right. Sure DCC active suspension is working its magic so maybe this is irrelevant for non-DCC owners but if you have/are after a DCC car,  there really is nothing to worry about simply due to the size.

3) Biggest engine = bigger brakes = bigger requirements overall. I don't know which engine you were after but a 280/272 on 16" would look and drive weird I feel and would not allow to exploit the car's capabilities too well.

I think you're worrying based on automotive facts and realities of previous decades that don't apply in this particular case. Unless you have indeed tried a 18"/19" Superb (esp. on DCC) and did not find it refined enough.

The point is tho, Pilot Sport 4S in 18" may be better again - actually would be. And so this is not about Tyre A vs Tyre B (brand / model) its about what could be possible. This is about trade offs between factors that matter to customers. Which is what this video shows ...

 

 

In terms of Noise tho, the 18" was best (I suppose this has to do with resonant frequencies of the whole tyre-wheel-suspension-cabin as a system). In terms of comfort  - 17" was best (as you would expect).
