Hi,

 

I wondered if anyone on here would be able to help with diagnosing why the alarm on my 2007 Octavia Estate has started going off at random? Weirdly it seems to sound at c11pm having quietly sat on the drive for the rest of the day. Very annoying as I’m usually already in bed and it’s not good for neighbour relations - particularly as we’ve only just moved in to the house! The driveway is on a steep slope - not sure if that might be the cause, or just an end of life alarm...

 

I live in Wokingham. If anyone has access to VCDS (?) I’m happy to contribute beer money. Alternatively recommendations to a good local Skoda specialist  would be great.

There may be a tilt sensor on your car which could be triggered if you are on a steep enough slope to prevent lifting/towing or removal of wheels/tyres. Are you sure there isn't a spider or similar small creature that is moving around in the evening which could trip a proximity sensor inside the car. I recently found a large cobweb near my rear headrests and located the offending critter.

Thanks Shy. I’ll certainly do a spider check this morning as we were moving house over the weekend and it’s possible one of the critters has set up home. I do find it strange how the alarm went off at roughly the same time each night tho...

Your car is just the right age to have this problem. The alarm unit is rated for a six years life before replacing the whole alarm assembly. The nicd battery usually lasts longer before it dies or leaks, eating away the tracks on the printed circuit board.

First indication is often a random alarm sounding some hours after switching off the engine. A VCDS scan will confirm it and there is a map of users willing to scan for you in the maintenance(?) forum.

 

Quite expensive to have Skoda replace it but cheap to do it yourself with a new unit bought from China. You may be able to replace just the battery if there is no corrosion.

Unfortunately I'm not sufficient competent to change the alarm over myself. I'll see if I can find someone to help do a VCDS scan to confirm the root cause and look for an independent in Berkshire - if a new alarm is needed.
