Starting issues and eml

Featured Replies

Hello,

Just bought a mk1 ocatavia 2l petrol on a Y plate, not sure what engine code, and the eml seems to come on and it has trouble starting when there is not much fuel in the tank. Has anyone else experienced this, seems to be ok when the fuel level is above the 2 line on the gauge but as soon as it gets lower than the first bar the eml comes on and it has trouble starting. Scanned it and it came up with a cts error code, high resistance or some ****. I'm thinking it's fuel pressure related and when the fuel level in the tank is ok it's getting the correct pressure so I'm thinking fuel filter needs changing. When it doesn't start it stinks of fuel so I'm thinking the injectors aren't atomising properly because of low fuel pressure. Runs fine in both cases (light on or off) when it's managed to start.

Coolant temp sensor is very common, pretty cheap and easy to swap too.

Id be looking at the in tank pump. If you don’t have a fuel pressure gauge it’s worth a visual check anyway.

Hi mate thanks for the reply, yeah cts isn't what's causing this I'm fairly positive of that. Just been having a look around this site and as You say there seems to be some issues with the lift pump and fuel run back, must be that I reckon so I'll get int there and change the pickup filter and see what I can see and then change the inline filter on the way out. Cheers man! :)

It's worth changing the coolant temp sensor though as they can cause starting issues.

Very much so. I'd do that before trying anything else.

Agree with the coolant temp sensor. Very easy to fit and cost buttons. Do make sure you have some coolant to top up, as you will loose some when changing the sensor.

And for the love of God don't do it on a hot engine without releasing the cooling system pressure first. Not only does a coolant sensor to the forehead really not impress you also get a shower in boiling hot coolant too.
