Gosh where to begin?

🙋‍♂️ "Not at the beginning"

Ok about n years ago I sat and drove briefly a 3.2V6 elegance superb. I'll have one of these, one day. Never did, but was lucky enough to get a PD170 elegance 4x4, miss it. Sold it when working for myself in 2013, can't eat car panels apparently, who knew?

Fast forward to today, the citigo I traded the superb for still exists and the volvo v50, I brought last year also rumbles on in a subtle 5cylinder way.  Both for sale soon!

So I find myself thinking about a car ( new/nearly new < 12mths) and keeping it for 9+ years. So it has to be the right one!

What's the saying, don't ask a question you don't know the answer to, or is it, why do you ask a question, in order to learn...

Don't have kids, might have a dog, worse case is +3 passenger and camping kit. Avg case is +1 and camping/climbing kit.

I'm 90% certain I don't want a diesel, I'm doing < 15(20)k a year and that's pushing it.

This eliminates the first model of choice the octavia scout estate 😞

It also eliminate the second, which never even stood a chance, a superb scout, not in the UK.

The third, a SUV blah isn't going to happen...

So I really enjoy my driving, most of you do. Once on the open road set cruise and away we go, I enjoy the straight road and I love the bendy bits. Being on cloud five isn't good for that, physics and all. Everything away from a roadster esq is a compromise.

So the fourth line up is a sportline superb, prob in hatch form, as boot is still big enough!

"Yikes a big car, physics back at you and you said you liked bendy bits..."

yep, maybe I need to address that. DCC thats a thing, but hang about +9years how much to replace a funky damper...

Reality check a Octavia Estate is enough!

So it's a 245 vRS Estate vs a Superb Sportline/plus hatch then.

Either will be DSG/adaptive cruise etc. I'm only thinking about the 245 as traction... traction matters and previous experience without trick diffs or awd of some form beyond the FWD 200 marker is ... well, awkward. :D

Hang about a late entry to the party... A EA888 superb 272/280 in sportline/+ trim, dang they look good and none of the odd octy FL malarky.

The octy's should be falling soon with a wholly new model out. The FL superb, well I guess they hired a volvo designer, handy given the volvo outside. New for either won't be discounted, well not for at least the first 72hours.

So now it's a fair 3 way scrap.

  • 245 vrs Estate
  • Superb Sportline 220/190D + box Hatch
  • Superb Sportline 272 ( maybe DCC )

The first two can be had for similar money ( if I ignore traction and think sensible head ) and bizarrely so can the third if people will just stop buying them!!! I've missed two this week at 24k and 26k. Funnily enough I told the dealer about one of them being sold thanks to posts here :).

And to keep me on my toes the boogie wagon & vehicle I should get, a ford transit connect. With a simple conversion to be a small camper with 120PS, some aircon and big drinks bottle holder on the dash, I'll get there eventually...

Some choice spread there ;)

in 9+ years it will have 120+k on it and be worth a grand, maybe... but if acquired sub 30k, ideally sub 25k then < 270 quid a month, which is ok, sort of. Running a citigo has made me shy about 'monthly car' stuff.

Final thought, If I temper the right foot on junctions, once rolling there can't be much in it, but 240+ imho needs a trick diff/awd on damp roads making progress e.g. overtaking caravans in scotland. I've tried a 245 for a week and did enjoy it, albeit all to easy to make points on straights. I feel I want that 3.2 lazy comfort power... I feel I want something I can still chuck about on a A/B road. I feel deeply confused and a little tired :D

Oh my god I still don't know what the question is...

Let's play jeopardy...

Sportline 272 ...

Re the Transit Connect.  You want to be sure of getting one that can do the NSL's that a passenger car can.

There are Average speed camera areas where the vehicle class can catch you out.

Simple solution and means just one vehicle.

A Peugeot Rifter Long.XL Automatic.

Yep a rifter was on the list. Might be, again.

Maybe not the most inspiring drive I'll have...

If the connect could of been converted to camper then the dvla re-reg would of kicked in as campers can do same as cars on the a9 and similar. But the connect isn't quite big enough, if my maths is right ( not always )

Plan Z99, is a transit. Definitely not the drive of my life, but I won't need to worry about packing compactly or rocking up late to the hotel.

TBH at the moment I'm torn between a nice L&K 1904x4 with extra toys in octy estate. Overnight I dismissed the vRS as nearly a 270 and I'd always wonder... So go slightly further away and enoy 50+

Then swinging back I still end up on a 270 superb hatch.

Oddly I prefer the fastback/hatch style in the superb and the estate in the octy. However I do prefer the next gen octy to the current one. But fiscally, I can look past the FL trauma :D

I'm the same.  Don't think that's odd at all.

Once my 220 vRS was around the 300bhp mark, there were comments made about needing a diff.  My experience was to the contrary, I just needed to not expect to much of it and be a bit gentler with the loud pedal if conditions didn't allow.

My Octy Estate could swallow my e-bike. But I still got prissy about the bike causing rub marks inside the car.  No matter how many towels or rags I used, it always seemed to manage to rub something.  I'd probably feel different if I had a Transit to chuck it in!

Do you need AWD?  I've had a hankering.  Always wanted, never needed.

I had a Mk1 Superb, and it was superb for comfort, space, wafting along....

Gaz

I plan to keep my 245 for at least 10 years and don't care if it is worth £5,000 or £500 because judging by how it puts a big  on my face every time I fire it up and drive it I realised how boring my 2016 Superb was. Yes it was quiet, comfortable and very well screwed together but so is lying in a coffin. As Gaz explains you just have to be sensible with the go pedal and not expect to beat Lewis Hamilton in his E63S estate away from the lights. Big bonus me me is the regular 40mpg average economy (even the wife managed 37mpg the other day on her one hour 26 mile commute). Insurance £301 for both of us driving and 3 years road tax has cost me just £445.

MISSING WORD

If you are buying a car to keep 9 years, and can afford all 3 choices, then go with the best one. As in the one that you fancy most.

No point getting one where you might regret over time with what ifs. When I was looking for mine, I considered the 220 superb as the head says it's the sensible one. I mean that is still plenty power for day to day. I'm the end, you only live once, so I went for the 280. Fact that I don't do huge mileages makes fuel economy immaterial.

Also, in 9 years, there won't be full fat ICEs like these anymore. Last chance :)
