Dashcam

Featured Replies

Having been cut up by an idiot, i thought a dashcam might be a good idea.  I was given an ancient one but (a) it only films straight ahead and (b) the mount is quite clunky and too big to sit out of the way behind the rear view mirror. I also have a Garmin Santa’s so don’t want to clutter the windscreen too much.

any recommendations for something not too expensive that won’t take up too much room?

I've got a Thinkware F750 (front and rear) in my Fabby. the front camera doesn't have a screen (you need to use the app to set/line it up) it sits behind the rear view mirror, with only the two LED's (recording and GPS) visible. And the rear is a tiny 'lipstick' style cam. Both 1080p which is enough for licence plates etc.. and Clear as a bell video files (80mb/s) I've submitted a few videos to the plod for numpties/insurance claims etc...

There's an app for your mobile (set-up, reviewing videos, Downloading Videos) and an app for Windows which you can do the same if you whip the card out and stick it in a reader! (this also syncs the front and rear videos when reviewing them, and shows GPS/map coords, and G-of turns, Hills and impacts etc...

Really easy to fit... Add-a-Fuse on the Rear Wash Wipe fuse for the switched, then find an unswitched for the 'Parking Monitoring' And hide the wiring up in the headlining/door pillars etc... Took me about 45 minutes to fit and set up!!

I think the latest is the F800 (pro)

I have had one for a long time now, before the "rear" view ones come and when they were much more expensive lol.......so mine records front only, but has all the features of the current ones.

Blackvue is what I use and I bought extra mounts so it can just switch from car to car. Many more updates to it now.

Thanks everyone.  I think I have misled you somewhat with sloppy wording.  When I said it only films straight ahead, I meant it had a very narrow field of vision - it can see what is straight ahead of my bonnet, rahter than what's happening at either side.  It really is very old and cr@p.

What a job, chasing down baddies in performance cars........cool....

The video sizes on the micro SD chip are about 5 times the size of this compressed video. 4Gb to 8Gb is easily enough. Use 'freemake' for free editing if see something interestin...

I've got one of those mirror dashcams from Amazon, which serves as a sat nav, blind spot mirror and has a rear camera that you can feed through the headliner. It also runs Android, so you can install apps on it, like TomTom Go. You can wire the rear camera into the reversing light to power that. I have mine on a tap a fuse off the rear wiper and a hidden cigarette lighter socket behind the dash in one of those panels that used to hold the fuse box in the Mk 1.

The newer ones do 4G and bluetooth, which enable the satnav to talk through the radio as well as access an OBD scanner if you have one connected so you can display cool things about what your car is doing.
