Happy birthday Skoda Citigo Colours - 3 years old.

Featured Replies

Our 2016, 2-door, manual Skoda Citigo Colours has just had its birthday and as a consequence is now out of the warranty period.  It was purchased in early August 2016 as a pre-registered car from Vantage Skoda in Lancaster with 13 miles on the speedo.

It was sourced via carwow.com and our first internet buy.  We were very happy with the deal as the salesman (Paul Hankinson) agreed to deliver it a few miles up the road to the Heysham sea terminal, where I had arrived on the Ben-My-Chree from the Isle of Man after a 4 hour 'cruise' from Douglas harbour.  Paul completed a comprehensive 'hand over' of the car in the terminal car park, and I handed over the balance of £7745 in cash before we both went our separate ways.  Myself, straight back on the ferry for another 4 hour crossing of the Irish Sea dodging the gas rigs and wind turbines.

The car was impeccably prepared by Oliver the valet guy and there were no faults with the pre-delivery inspection, even the tyre pressures were accurate (including the spare) !

The vehicle was immediately re-registered in the IoM with Manx plates which added around £90 to the bill, plus £20 for a pair of plates and £46 for 12 months road fund licence.  Incidentally the ferry cost £38 outbound as a foot passenger and £220 inbound with the vehicle. I fitted a set of mudflaps front and rear (Ebay £50) and Climair wind deflectors to the door frames (£30 Ebay). So the total 'on the road' cost was £8239.

I've serviced the car myself rather than take it to a dealer.  At the time Skoda weren't blessed with a franchise in the IoM, though this has now been rectified with the arrival in 2018 of Jacksons who are a multi-franchise dealership including Bentley and Porsche plus all the other main manufacturers.  The Citigo has used a set of tyres (30k front and 40k miles rear), 2 headlamp bulbs and a pair of front wiper blades.  Plus a set of spark plugs, air and cabin filters and 5 changes of oil & filter.  Other than that, there have been no other expenses.  I have to add that the Dunlop Blu-Response tyres are far quieter than the OE Continentals!  I also cleaned the rear drums when the tyres were changed and bled the brake fluid  Front pads are approx 50% worn.

It's covered 45 857 miles at the last fill up using 3395 litres costing £4438 averaging 61.4 mpg @£1.31/litre.  And bear in mind that at 30 miles long and 10 miles wide, the IoM doesn't have motorways, in fact the only dual carriageway is only approx. 400 metres in length.  Not that I take advantage of the fact, but in de-restricted areas there is no upper speed limit. And there is no requirement for an annual MOT test, but driving with an unroadworthy car can result in prosecution.

What do I like about the car?  The engine is surprisingly torquey compared with our outgoing 2008 Toyota Aygo which is welcome due to the hills in these parts.  The privacy windows are a boon in keeping the car cooler in the warmer months which is especially appreciated by a brace of Border terriers which regularly come along for the ride.  Fuel consumption is excellent (sic) and the ride and build quality is much better than the Toyota - in fact, it's straight up a better car than the Toyota.

Would I buy another Citigo? Yes, though I am disappointed with the transmission - it's been noisy since about 4500 miles, and whilst it changes smoothly, it sounds seriously rough at idle either hot or cold.

I'm planning on keeping it for another 5 years.

Apologies for the long post.

Cheers...Snaefell.

Glad your enjoying your Citigo.

How on earth did you manage to do so many miles on such a small island?

You don't like the transmission? Was it an auto by any chance.

Pleased to hear you have liked the car, as we bought one for my wife a couple of months ago. Colour edition with 25 miles om the clock, but actually already 6 months old from registration. We rteally like it to, and prefer it in many ways to her prior 63reg Fabia. My wife thinks it just looks more modern inside and out.

You have a different life style over there, with little or no congestion.Driving here is a stop/start affair in the West Mids -no more than 50yds before you need to stop for something.

My mpg is between 42 -47 .Bearing in mind the Citigo was a relatively cheap car compared to others,it does the job.Bought mine from new.

The ride quality is not up to my previous Corsa D,but the car makes up for it by improved mpg.The engine (60ps)is a bit of a grunt/groan affair at lower speeds, and you do need to use the gearbox on hills.I have had no cause yet to return it for any warranty concerns,as the build quality is good.Trim is fixed down well. Time will tell if the battery stands up.......

We only have the one vehicle, if I not driving it the 'other half' is, works out at 42 miles/day.

No a manual, tried the auto clutch box in the Toyota Aygo and couldn't get along with it.

In the busy rush hour, there can be up to 2 cars ahead of you at the traffic lights.  And in my 6 mile commute, there are a set that need negotiating.  And I often have to drop down to 3rd gear approaching roundabouts.

It seems the VW/Skoda warranty is holding up well for manufacturer and customer alike.  I'm not sure paying for additional years would be cost effective for us as I'm reasonably sure it will prove reliable for a further 30k miles/2 years.
