indicators wont turn off!!

Featured Replies

yesterday whilst driving home i made a left turn using the indicators and noticed they never self cancelled. i tried to put the stick into the middle and the right indicator came on. now im going down the road flicking between left and right - there is no middle!! i tried flashing the lights using maim beam and everything. ( must have looked like a right plonker going down the road ) in the end i had to turn the car off to put it right. whats going on there then?

I encountered this problem on my new vrs. A quick look in the manual will do the trick.

It's a special 3 sec burst of indicator thing I think. You can trigger it by holding the indicator in a certain place for a certain amount of time and it then flashes for about three secs before turning itself off.

As I said, have a look in the manual and all shall be revealed... hopefully!

Mine's done something similar once....

If you hold the indicator near the 'locking' position, then let it go, it doesn't seem to self cancel.... Mine eventually sorted itself out, so I shrugged and decided not to do it that way in future.

I think you'll find it self cancels after approx three secs if you don't panic and try to cancel it yourself. As I said, have a read of the manual.

My vrs is at the dealers at the mo so I can't go and verify exact timings, may have a go in the 1.2 classic courtesy fabia that's parked outside though!

My mind this problem doesn`t have anything to do with that "three times flashing indicator"

I'm wondering if they haven't given them long enough to self-cancel though.

It does seem like an age when it's doing it and the first few times it happened in my car there was a tendency to panic and try to cancel it yourself. This appears to make the signal start counting it's self-cancel time again thus prolonging things and making you think that it really is stuck.

Would be interested to hear if any of the people currently experiencing this phenomenon have fully read the relevant section of the manual and are able to differentiate what they are experiencing from the '3sec' burst on the indicator.

First time it happened to me I panicked too, if the indicator arm is pushed in one direction but not as far as the 'locked' position I get four flashes before it stops even though the indicator arm is still in the center position, if you try to stop it by pushing the indicator arm in the opposite direction, again without going as far as the 'locked' position then it sets off four flashes in that direction. Pushing to the 'locked' position (in the direction the indicators are showing to avoid confusion to other drivers) then moving it back to the center will cancel the four flash timer, well it seems to on my car.

This may sound like a stupid question but why on earth would you want a 'three second' burst. I've survived quite happily for 25 years of motoring with standard left right self cancelling (non-cancelling on my p6:mad: ) indicators

vRS - T minus 4 days 18 hours and counting....

Tap to change lanes...tap to go back. Two touches instead of four. You can still do it the old fashioned way, just push it to the locked position. Everyone's happy.

You'll find it remarkably useful to indicate appropriately when coming off a roundabout, for example ;)

load of rubbish. the idea is with indicators is that you INDICATE your intentions before doing it. this means minimum of 4 clicks before changing lanes. one click then moving doesnt tell anyone what your about to do, most people wont see your first 2 flashes.

so the 4 flash burst is useless..

and im a police advanced driver so know the crack about driving.

The indicator stalk is one of the best features about the Fabia.

I think the one-touch tap for three flashes is perfect for lane changing on motorways.

There's occasionally a reason for more than 3 but for the majority of the time three's plenty.

There's nothing in The Highway Code making you indicate for a period of time...

I indicate before I start moving. Happen to steer quick enough to change lanes within about 3 seconds. Nothing to do with advanced driving, just look ahead/behind.

Also that doesn't change using it at roundabouts, where in the UK it seems everyone uses (or ignores) the concept of perhaps using the blinkers consistently. Some indicate when they come off, some when they come on, some don't at all.

If I need more than 3 flashes I put it on the 'normal' position. Either way, based on what you're saying '3 isnt enough' you won't ever have trouble anyway as you would turn the indicator on, then cancel manually. Assuming it's cancelled properly and in a normal, controlled manner, that's all it will do...

As for 'most people not seeing it' - if I'm in any doubt at all I will indicate for longer and I DO agree with the sentiment of what you're saying. But I indicate when I change lanes regardless of whether there is traffic, as a habit. In those cases the 3 blinks are sufficient :)

The 3 flash thing is great - having just come from a Vectra C with the computer controlled indicators, which I really got used to and liked. Clarkson didn't - OH well!

It's not a bug, it's a feature :)
