Roof rack and box

Featured Replies

Following a three week camping trip, I'm thinking about getting roof bars and a box for my Octy hatch.

Any advise or thoughts, what to avoid, etc? Eg is it worth getting the aerodynamic roof bars that have an oval profile rather than the rectangular ones or are they just as noisy?

Thanks,

Mark

I've literally just ordered a set of Cruz bars for my Octavia. I saw them recommended on another post on here. Should be here on Monday. I'll let you know how they fit, work and look etc. 👍

Great, thank you! Could you also comment on how much noise they make at speed? Much appreciated 😃

I have a set of Thule square bars we use on my mk2 Octy estate and they do sing at speed.  It's not an obtrusive sound but you do know they are there.

In previous lives I've used both square and aero bars on a Citroen Xantia and the aeros were quieter.  I also used squares and a large roof box on a Peugeot 406 saloon on a trip to Europe; wind noise evident at anything much over 50mph and quite obtrusive at Autobahn speeds (well, around 75-80).

For the difference in cost I'd certainly go for the Aero bars (or whatever version is now on offer) or as a suggestion shop around for a secondhand set of bars - there's loads on fleabay, especially once the "Summer" is over - and see what you think.

Just FYI, and assuming your motor is a 5D O2 hatch, here's a list of Thule offering that fit.  Usuual disclaimer, happy customer over the years, no connection otherwise.

Also, this Google{tm} search brings up a variety of used offers and some more potential advice sources.

Thank you so much, that's really helpful. Will definitely go for oval bars.

I bought a pair of those cheap Aldi 'aero' roof bars for my Scout.

They howl really loudly from about 40mph!
(They are also awful for other reasons but I have bent them now!)

I reckon it is because of the open channel on the underside, like blowing across the top of a bottle. That is something to check with any roof bars. Some makes, from my research into the noise, offer a filler strip to close the channel once the spacing for the rail clamps has been decided.

The old square tube bars I had on my Octi 1 hummed a little but not badly, but are a touch short for the scout.
