Octavia VRS Diesel - Is it the right decision?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

We are looking to buy a new 'family car'and the Octavia VRS tops the list for us both, the biggest issue comes in we want a diesel, preferably the 4WD DSG.

Initially the wife will use the car for her commute to work which is approximately 8 miles each way, with the occasional motorway trip - maybe once/twice a month.

I will use the vehicle on weekends, i have a more 'sprited' driving approach so the car will get a good clean out most weekends as i cover 150+ miles each weekend.

Why are we not looking at a petrol?

In around 6 months, i will use the car for my daily commute which is a 60mile round trip down the joyful M6, at this point i know it won't be a problem.

Having had a VW TDi previously, my 60mile commute seen the DPF light on once per week after the emmisions fix and the car was near undrivable... so it was handed back.

Does anyone else own a diesel and do frequent short journeys? Have you had a problem?

Thank you in advance.

I have Octavia 3 vRS TDI 4x4 daily 100km ca. 60miles ... before Octavia 3 2.0TDI 150ps M6 same way home - work - home ... I have no problem with DPF but I drive this in 90% time, 10% in city ... only difference is consumption ( DSG + Haldex) and + 0.5l oil addition during 15000km.  For short trips i prefer petrol but if you ride each weekend 150+miles i think there is no problem with TDI.

Disable the Stop/Start and let the engine run you should be ok.

Whats your total yearly mileage? Have you not considered the TSI and if not, why not?

I did consider the TSI, but had the following reservations.

1) Annual Mileage!

I would expect around 25k-30k a year to put on the octavia with shared use.

2) AWD
The better half insists on having four driven wheels, even if it is not permanent. We have recently moved semi-rural and the roads are not treated, she likes the idea of extra 'help'.

The VRS TSi doesn't appear to come in this set-up.

3) Im a child!
If i get the TSI EA888 it would end up being the new 'toy', the tunability means 400+ hp is in easy reach for small money. 😁

I would also consider at least some well regarded all-season tyres;  if you're prone to snow and ice for days on end then Winter tyres would be even better.

A FWD with Winter tyres will keep going when a AWD car with Summers will be struggling.
