Vrs se intermittent long starting and now cutting out

Featured Replies

OK, a few weeks ago it started struggling to start, instead of firing straight away took maybe 5 seconds or so. On a few occasions it has just started after 10 seconds then cut out and restarted. Last night it actually cut out on the road then after looking for a place to pull in got power again and drove back no problem. It is only intermittent and always starts cold. I have checked its pumping fuel and has no codes. It doesnt matter if its on a hill or not. I'm in Portugal so I cant get to help easily. Any ideas?

Ok done.

I've had the  19463 -  Camshaft Position Sensor (G40): No Signal before, I checked the wires pin 1 is 12v, 2 is 5v and 0v from 3, I have continuity through 2 and 3 from the ecu.

Start by checking the cam timing if you have the right sized drill bit or locking pin.

  • Author

Thanks, I have the locking tools as I plan to do a timing belt as it’s a few months overdue. I only have a cheap copy vcds cable so I’ll have to pick one up. Do you know the model I need?

You can't check torsion value if the cam position sensor is throwing a code.

Ok makes sense, I'll check timing today, thanks

Ok timing appears ok, pin goes all the way in on TDC, no more fault codes and starting fine since I cleared the codes. Not sure I would risk the 800 mile drive home just yet.....

Camshaft sensor sensor no signal is a pretty common one and would have those symptoms.

Need to check the wiring to the sensor, the sensor itself and the pick up on the cam pulley (seen them fall off before now).

In theory the car should run without a camshaft sensor, it's mainly used for quick start cylinder recognition. It will eventually find TDC from the crank sensor but it just takes more revolutions of the engine. Where it can cause an issue is if it gives a partial or incorrect signal and confuses things. This is normally when you get an incorrect signal or correlation fault.

Yes I had it before and it just went away about 4 years ago, the car had been sitting a few months and came on when I stuck my foot down.

Ok, will do. What resistance are we looking for through the sensor? Wiring from ECU to clip under rocker cover is showing pin 1 is 12v, 2 is 5v and 0v from 3, I have continuity through 2 and 3.

The code has currently disappeared again.

Great news the car can run without the sensor, what do you think caused the cut out though? That was worrying, I have had 2, vrs's and covered about 250000 trouble free miles.

So I have checked all the wiring to the sensor, had the sensor out, everything looks OK. Car starts fine cold and anytime after strts like the sensor isnt connected. It is starting to cut out daily, only for 5 seconds or so but I have some new faults. The EGR I know about as I pulled off the pipe, back on now..

Fuel temperature sensor is in the fuel filter housing, really starting to look like wiring faults now.

  • Author

Thanks, I think I'll have to get it looked at

  • Author

Out of interest, which of the 3 faults do you think would cause a cut out or do you think its a seperate fault not logged?

Cutting out could be caused by the fuel pump relay, none of the three faults you list will cause it.

Thanks for your help, changed cam sensor and all seems to be better.
