Generally when someone changes the fuel filter on a petrol engine it's because they were already having problems and some moron down the pub said "have you tried changing the fuel filter" because it often helps diesels start better.

sorry im guessing it causes a problem when changing fuel filters for diesels?

No, changing a fuel filter on diesels can help because they trap water, but petrol filters don't need changing here in the UK because our petrol is very clean compared to other countries, a petrol filter will corrode before it ever clogs.

Bad news. This morning I dropped it off at Acorn Autos who told me it has lost compression and not much could be done for it other than e.g. proper rebuild or engine swap which is not viable in this case because of value/mileage. Bottom line is, I'd have to scrap it and get some eighty quid for it. I would need to empty the car and give them the V5 tomorrow morning.

I would normally go to get a second opinion but I'm not too excited about towing it everywhere.

Anyone has any better idea before the above happens? I'm gutted, apart from this unlucky incident it was a clean and reliable example, always enjoyed driving/owning it.

But why has it lost compression?

really sorry about that 😞

Thanks. There's still no good explanation of what happened. Important fact is, you may lose the compression because the timing is off.

Skoda fans will be delighted to hear I arranged a tow track to show it to someone else, there's a guy in B'ford who I have a lot of faith in after a few minutes chat.

Hi everyone, I picked it up from the garage tonight. Answers time.

During the filter replacement I coincidentally lost the timing due to the chain being stretched out and tensioners being a mess. Note that the chain wasn't making any noise before it happened. As a result of that, pistons have smashed half of the valves and of course the compression was gone. I had the timing elements changed, valves replaced, new head gasket fitted. As you can imagine I paid a lot but I was lucky to find a place to do a good job for a fair price (Grecar in Bradford). Really chuffed about having my Skoda back!
