Doesn't start after fuel filter change (1.2 petrol)

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I think I have some interesting problem to look at, I'll be grateful if someone gives me a hand.

Before I started, my 1.2 HTP (code BME) was starting well, worked evenly enough and maybe just wasn't too powerful on the motorway. I finally got around to change the fuel filter as it was probably due.

I changed the fuel filter to Comline EFF129. The secret files confirm it is a correct part (https://skoda.7zap.com/en/cz/fabia/fab/2006-453/2/201-201040/#9)

Replacement wise, I disconnected all the connectors starting from the 'out' side, installed the new filter on the inlet side, put the outlet into a bottle and started the pump for a moment to saturate the filter, then plugged the remaining fuel line. Inspected for leaks, lowered the cars and proceeded to try to fire it up expecting that the first five times won't be successful. Then the car never starts.

I was hoping to drive somewhere after than (just a fuel filter replacement, right?) so I decided to get a "mobile mechanic" to have a look at that, he looked around, tried to start the engine with "defibrillator", then jump leads and this magic spray. The car just didn't want to start.

So the starter motor works but sounds just a bit quieter although speed-wise it doesn't seem to be very slow or close. I think the battery is just a bit low from multiple attempts to fire it up. Much better with the jump leads although it does not start the engine even for half a second.

When you attempt to start it, it doesn't ignite at all.

Some checks done so far:

- oil level correct and doesn't smell of fuel

- there is fuel coming to the injector rail, if you press the little bleed valve, fuel squirts out and if you press it.

- spark plugs were slightly wet. Could the engine be just flooded with fuel? What do you do then?

Someone suggested checking all fuses, I'm going to do it this afternoon.

How many times did you try to start it? I had to stop trying because to avoid finishing the battery.

BTW fuses tested with a multimeter, everything looks ok.

The fuel pressure regulator is on the fuel filter. You either change the filter complete with a new regulator or you swap the regulator from the old filter to the new one.

Do you still have the original one?

no i threw it away when i did the service, im due for another service soon so i could keep that if you need a picture.

I just wanted to check you haven’t binned a filter with a pressure regulator and fitted one without.

What does a FPR look like? I assumed I just need a filter with three connectors, it seemed to be a drop-in replacement. The old filter did not have any removable part but in the new one, you could take the inlet off (sealed with an o-ring, secured with a spring and if you take it off the yellow filter itself can be seen. I do still have the old one.

The fuel filter you posted on ebay doesn't match the part number of the one on the 7zap catalogue link you posted.

There are multiple fuel filters depending on if you have a return line, fuel pressure regulator and what the fuel pressure requirements are

I found it under the "aftermarket" tab. Comline mentioned this particular Fabia on their list of cars too.

I am betting you have fitted the wrong fuel filter

Oh I see what happened. As I understand, froggy's car runs fine with the filter above. :)  And mine is in the top post; i.e. Comline EFF129

Something obviously isn't right, try swapping the send and return lines round.

when i changed it over, i only took the filter out and the new one put in. if there was anything else that was attached to the filter then i wont have removed it.

@froggy8 do you have an issue with your car?

i put my car detail on ebay and this one says it will fit my car.

i have started to put a few things on my watch list so i will be ready for a full service.

If only you still had the old filter.

i dont want to jinx myself but everything runs spot on. ( touch wood ) :D

sorry but i did have it on my bedroom drawers but it was stinking the house out so decided to throw it.
