No it’s just a screen swap from there. The MIB2 has a 800x480 resolution and can take an 8 inch screen

I have some faults on my MY2013 Octavia estate which has a 6.5" Bolero fitted. The main faults are that the SD card slot does not work, and the bluetooth phone sound is rather garbled. It seems to me that these faults are likely to lie in the glovebox CD/head unit. If I were simply to replace this unit with a 5Q0035874A of any vintage (presumably the newer the better?) would it work fine? Also would it need recoding?

 

Is there a HW version from which CarPlay is implemented, and would this work fine with an original display unit?

 

Finally, would I need a new USB board with a newer head unit - no problem if so, I would be happy to get one.

I can’t copy and paste here now for some reason but you’ll need a 5G0035222F cable set from AliExpress to replace the cables you have now, then you’ll need a USB/Aux trim with the USB and Aux. Make sure it’s a 5Q0035726E green tipped USB.

If you have a MIB1 now you will be able to fit a MIB2 but the radio unit will need CP removal and coding outside the dealer network as with any MIB retrofit. The A on the Amundsen part number is a 2016 model, B is a 2017 and C is 2018. All are retrofitable but at increasing prices. I wouldn’t bother with a B revision as there are no more features than the A. The C is a much newer unit but you would need a 5E0919605M screen to match. You can use that 8 inch screen on any of the MIB2’s but the APP button will only work on the 5Q0035874C.

When you say CP coding, that would be Component Protection? I have previously used my helpful local Skoda dealership for this - would they be able to do it for me?

 

Regarding the version - sorry for not explaining in detail, but within the A model there appear to be different hardware and firmware versions such as SW:0245, HW:H25, SW:0359, HW:H30 or I have even seen a H20 hardware version, all with the same product code. I am sure that this would not make any difference but just wanted to check - I would imagine the later the better as presumably it has less bugs!

Yes CP=Component Protection, all A revision radio’s are H24 02xx firmware which can be updated to the latest firmware 0253 but 0245 is best anyway, easier for the person doing the coding work if it’s on older firmware. 0245 is great anyway. When the CP has been removed you will need to send the unit outside of the dealer network to have nav, voice commands and SmartLink reactivated, the you will need a 5Q0035726E USB for it to work.

Would swapping this cable set and USB port be enough to get my mib1 working, or would it need additional coding? If so is that possible with VCDS ?

It would require coding to deactivate the MDI and activate the USB/Aux. It would only give you USB/Aux on the MIB1 though. If you are staying MIB1 I would get a dedicated MDI plug as there is no advantage to changing it unless you were going MIB2.

That's great - when I have fitted the unit I will take it to my Skoda dealer for CP to be removed. I have also purchased a suitable USB port.

 

Any clues about who I can get to reactivate the other features? Also, will the version of SmartLink in this unit include support for Apple CarPlay? 

Yes SmartLink includes CarPlay. Contact Pab567 on here ([email protected]). He’s the genius who has sorted both of my radio retrofits.

Hi Sasha - The info above about ODIS and how it worked across VW was invaluable in finding the right people to approach.

 

In the end, Smashing (!), a VAG specialist in Leeds, swapped the failed unit and eBay unit you identified for me, and removed the Component Protection with ODIS.  Smashing were super and great (Bullseye 1980s anyone?😁).

 

Cost

£42 unit from eBay

£96 fitting and coding removal

 

Total £138 inc VAT.  This compares to £1115 quoted by DM Keith (West Yorkshire Skoda) and who explicitly told me it was not possible for a secondhand unit to be recoded.  A big raspberry to them.

Hi Sasha, my "new" MIB2 head unit has turned up. It is a 5Q0035874A and when I install it in the car in place of my original unit (a 5E0035842A) it works fine until the CP times out.

 

Fine, that is, except that the display is obviously only showing the top left quarter of the screen (see picture).

 

Is there any way of getting the head unit to scale its output to the resolution of my display, or do I have to obtain a new display?

You’ll need a new display. Amazed it works at all, mine had CP lock on straight away. You can choose from the 5E0919605J 6.5 inch display, the 5E0919606 8 inch PFL Columbus display or the 5E0919605M 8 inch FL Amundsen display.

6.5”  5E0919605J is considerably cheaper, prices start around £70 upward. Other two are £300-£400. Watch out for the cheapies with a fault line on the displays 😁

SashaGrace knows her stuff, I’m getting a unit from @pab567 next week from her recommendation.

Sorry, just noticed that you had already mentioned the J model in your post.

Some further advice needed, I'm afraid! I now have the two units which should apparently be suitable as follows:

Head unit: 5Q0 0358 74 A to replace original 5E0 0358 42 A

Display: 5E0 919 605 J to replace original 5E0 919 605 B 

 

As previously mentioned the new head unit functioned OK apart from CP and the fact that the display is the wrong resolution. I have now taken out the original display and tried to install the new display, however I have found that one of the two connectors will not plug in to the new display.

 

It looks like the actual connector itself will fit, but the plastic housing around it has different keying. In fact it looks like a mirror image of the original connector's keying. See attached photos.

 

Any clues on this?

 

Just to add - there was no such problem with the head unit - all connectors fitted fine to the newer unit (apart from the lack of a connector for the missing satnav antenna, which is fine by me as I never use car satnavs any way!).

Yes you just need to shave them down, this is perfectly normal  You’ll need to do the same on the USB.
