new VRS 245 and chain noise

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I'm new to this forum and will say hello on the welcome board after this.

Purchased a 2018 VRS 245 DSG in black last week with 1800 miles on the click and absolutely in love with it, fantastic all rounder!

I noticed that on cold starts I get a very high pitched metal on metal sound for a few minutes while the car warms up, sounds like the timing chain. Is this anything to be worried about?

I also hear it when car is warm and I blip the throttle in neural, just a faint high pitched chain noise. There is no way the chain is wearing out at such a low mileage, will this disappear as the engine settles in more?

Is it worth taking back to dealers to get it checked over?

I have a video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXLAve4jpy0

Hope fully someone else has heard/sorted this noise.

Thanks!

Take it back.

Mine does it. Can only hear it when the engine is cold and the windows are down. Disappears by the time water temperature is up.

On cold start the engines run extra fast/rich to help get the cat up to temp, I think it's just that.

Should idle at about 1,200 rpm with a cold engine and by the time I get to the top of my road the idle revs have dropped to about 1,000 rpm. Not heard anything other than the purposeful burble from the Milltek exhaust.

Ok awesome, nothing much to be worried about. I was thinking it might have been because the engine was so new that something was rattling a little bit or running dry till oil came into contact. Its completely minor really but being my newest car I've been keeping a close eye on it!

Good to keep a monthly check on oil level as mine consumed 0.25 litre every 3,600 miles until the first service at 18,500 miles and no oil since (Jan 2019). Monthly tyre pressure checks as well I like 2.7 bar front/rear for my mainly motorway commute averaging just over 40mpg after nearly 25,000 miles.

Yep I'm going to be keeping a very close eye on oil etc, It was serviced when I got it so it would be interesting to see if it does burn through oil. Its not going to be a hardship, I had a RX8 a few years ago that would drink as much oil as fuel!

I haven't played with tyre pressures yet, I'm not really liking the bridgestones that came on it, trying to wear them down before going for a set of pilot sports or sport contact 6. Any recommendations?

I did 12,500 miles on the original P Zero (225/35R19) which were still in good shape when I sold them to a member on this forum because I didn't like the Extremes (ironically just bought the wife a new 245 with 19" Extremes and P Zero tyres) and they were ok except a bit slidy in the wet so you had to take your time. Since doubled the mileage on the quite brilliant Michelin PS4S (235/35R19) which do everything better than the Pirelli's and are wearing even better although they are costly (but 18" size can be bought for around £400 per set of 4).

Is it just the Bridgestones that are so noisy? I hope they wear pretty quick I'm going to look at tyre noise before choosing new rubber.

My 2015 Vrs TDi DSG came with Bridgestone Potenza's and I really didn't like them but only had the car for 7 months and took it from 7,000 to 14,000 miles but wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

In my experience the TSI engine shouldn't use oil in between a  regular 10K annual service

I can't wait to get some fitted, for fast driving I'm yet to find a better tyre for grip.

Always been tempted with the rainsport 3's. I spent some time in the MX5 community and they were highly rated for our british summers 😂

A set of PS4's for £400, Il take that.

I never had any issue with my EA888 in my Scirocco R but always worth checking after each thousand miles for the first while.

Just had a browse at tyres on Black Circles, they have a 10% flash sale on today so if anyone is looking at changing tyres soon book it today and save. Sorry to hijack the thread btw, tyres are a gripping subject however.
