Drive shaft replacement

Featured Replies

a year or so ago O had a thred here about vibration issues, which turned out to be right side drive shaft, and replaced it last with with the cheapest i could find 😖 Lasted a about a year, now it starts making a whining noise with pitch that goes up in correlation with speed, not RPM. So 90% sure  its the cheepy thin 40 euro shaft.

Anyway, spent a bit more on a  MAPCO shaft this time, and left the car at the garage.

Fabia combi 1.4 2004,

What would be a fair time for the garage to charge to replace it? I'm thinking an hour should be plenty?

Ask them to diagnose the noise first, could be wheel bearing.

Good point, but I've had wheel bearing failures before, and it doesn't sound anything like that. Anyway, its being replaced as we speak :) It also have a vibration around 4K that was introduced with the current shaft, which i just decided to live with. But it prevented me from driving much faster that 120km/h. A bit annoying on Dutch roads, as i drive 90% on motorway.

We'll see if the noise is gone after. If not, more investigation i guess.

Hope to hear that you are back to smooth and silent motoring again soon.

Technically, the 6 driveshaft inner bolts should be replaced, as well as the nut on the outer end. See if your invoice lists these parts. I would have thought an hour was generous, time-wise. Especially as the outer CV shouldn't be stuck in the wheel bearing like the original probably was, as it's already been replaced once.

could of fudged the gearbox especially with the added vibrations you were talking about, I suffered the same kinds of vibrations with a cheap patent driveshaft

luckily I traded the car in shortly after fitment

Aiiii, I hope not. But based on the sound it could be. It's for sure something between gearbox and wheel. Although impossible to be sure, it sounds like it from the right side. If its the gearbox, it would be the end of this car. It has a value of 1500 euros now. Ive driven it from 39K to 160K, so I guess it had a ok run. I just bought a Fiat Ducato for camper conversion, but a little big for daily driving. (Although its just an L2)

fingers crossed whine usually means bearing of somesorts

Well, autodoc had sent me the wrong part. New ordered and return of this one 😞

Hmm, that was a waste of good cash. I'm too stubborn sometimes. New shaft made zero difference.

I'm starting to thinks it's the gearbox. Please correct me if my logic is flawed.

- The spinning/whining sound occurs only when there is actual load/throttle. Even in gear if I release throttle sound goes away. This should exclude wheel bearings?

- Frequency of sound goes up in tact with speed, not engine RPM. Which led me incorrectly to drive shaft.

- The vibration around 4K rpm is still there, noticeable from 3rd gear and up.

If it's not the shaft, and not bearings. I guess that just leaves the gearbox?

If so, on a car worth 1500 euros I guess it's pointless to repair. But can I drive it safely until it break completely? On the other hand it got only 160K, and allot of new parts over last couple years.

Ohh I forget the breaks was recently replaced, but just the front pads.

I should probably note that last year the front shaft was replaced as a last attempt to solve a baaad shaking after garage failed to diagnose and hinted towards gearbox and advised me to start look for new car.

As the shaking was much worse when turning right, and gone in left turns, I ordered a right shaft and that did fix it, but left me with the 4K vibration. Which I've just been driving to avoid occurring. (For the most part)

I guess this does point to gearbox?

I could send it to garage again, but I have my doubt they will be able to give me anything more than a suspicion....

Check/compare the front wheel bearings.

Try jacking up each front corner (or both at once ideally), and with gearbox in neutral spin each front wheel while holding the spring. The spring may vibrate and amplify the roughness of a failing bearing. If the right side is noticeably rougher, maybe try a new bearing. Got to be cheaper than changing gearbox.

Thanks :) definitely worth a shot

Sounds like differential wear, bad luck.

Just a small update. Had the garage do a proper check, and it has been determined the noise is coming from gearbox.

Surely getting a 2nd hand gearbox and new clutch while you're there and fitting it to a known good car is going to be cheaper than looking for another car with unknown problems that could be just around the corner and just as expensive.

Take it from me as I've done this plenty of times and learnt my lesson, stick with what you have and just repair it.

If you think it is worth 1500 euros when working then it's only going to be scrap value with a broken gearbox.

Yeah I am thinking very hard about this. At least I got some time until it's fails. The noise only seem to be 5th gear though.

Gonna cost around a thousand Euros to fix I suspect.

Good point, it only got 160k km on it.

If you can only hear it in 5th then top up the oil and keep driving it.

as above I got 20k out of mine before the box went boom

even then was only £450 for a  26k miler low box and fitting

Ohh that's bloody brilliant. The garage that diagnosed the gearbox told me to start looking for a new car.

Now I drained and filled up oil and the sound is gone.

Many thanks
