Compare Sygic to Google as a route finder and satnav

Featured Replies

Due to my 'happy go lucky' disposition, where I live and not being a 'local', I tend to use Google Maps to find out how close a reported crime or incident occurred to my home. Sad, but true.

The last time I can remember using Google Maps for navigation was at least 18 months ago and I did not like it compared to the Sygic, possibly because it was different to what I was used to.

Things I like about the Sygic compared to GM;

  • Real Time Traffic is fairly accurate and is indicated as a bar across the bottom of the screen, Blue is good, yellow is traffic buildup and red is runaway very quickly and find an alternative route. From what I can remember GM only indicates at the start of the journey there are holdups and does not give any further indication of the hold up until you approach it, by which time it is too late to do anything about it.
  • Sygic also shows your speed and the speed limit for the road you're on, IIRC it's only recently that GM shows your speed, let alone the speed of the particular road (though I may be wrong about it only recently showing your speed).
  • Lane Guidance on major roads is excellent and clear.  I like the fact that when approaching roundabouts it displays the number of the turnoff you have to take in the centre of the Roundabout icon at the top of the screen which is handy - the number does not count down as you pass turn offs which can be a pain, but I think they did that to stop confusing you. - "Wait, is it saying I should have taken the 3rd/2nd/1st turn off?"
  • It provides shortcuts for petrol stations, rest areas and parking on your route, which can be handy when in an unfamiliar area.
  • Above the real time traffic, it provides time and distance to your destination and expected arrival time which I have found to be fairly accurate.
  • Turn by turn instructions is very good.
  • Major map updates are fairly frequent, though a road near me is still displayed as a 60, even though it was changed to a 30 about 4 years ago.  They state they cannot do anything about it as they get their map info from Tomtom, but they did pass my comment onto Tomtom.
  • Fairly decent customer service.  They have always got back to me whenever I have had an issue (swapping over from my Samsung S3 to S5 being one) though it can take a few emails longer than I would like sometimes before they understand what I'm trying to get across - Sygic are based in the Czech Republic and Slovakia
  • Over the last few years I have found it to be a lot more stable than when I first used it. I cannot recall the last time it crashed, but having posted this, it will probably be the next time I use it.
  • Due to epilepsy my wife can have issues interpreting information but she has always commented on how easy it is to read and understand the information displayed in the Sygic maps compared to our TomTom.  Horses for courses.

When I bought many moons ago, they gave you a 7 day trial of the full system for you to see if it was suitable, not sure if they still offer that.

At the moment they are offering Premium Europe with Traffic for £12.49.

Tidied up after splitting from another thread.

Excellent writeup, Fin.  Thanks!

Have you tried any of the add-ons?  The dashcam idea appeals as does the heads-up display but it looks like you can't use them together?

This has been split from another topic after a request by a member.

Also, it will allow other people to evaluate different nav options apart from the 'main' ones.

I've now downloaded and will see how it compares within Android Auto (which I didn't initially check if it was compatible with). :blush

Edit. It looks like it doesn't work with AA at the moment. Ah well.

I've just bought it for my trip down to Italy in a couple of weeks time 👍

I have sygic on my android phone, and recently got a Pioneer head unit avh z5100dab with car play and Android auto, AA I use along with Google maps, btw it uses your phone data allowance.

The Pioneer (it android firmware) has its sat nav app choice Sygic, navmii, navitel and genius maps.

Having seen that Sygic was available thought I'd use but no I can't as the phone app is not the same Pioneer has Sygic Car Navigation with a license price £50, bummer.

Raised the issue with Sygic and they said my license doesn't apply to third party apps that Sygic have such for Pioneer.

Three days later got a email from Sygic offering new mirror product at about £34, saving £16 on buying from Pioneer.

Still deciding whether to buy, that doubles the price I've then paid Sygic.
