Automatic Headlights Starting

Featured Replies

Hello, guys !
I am new here. For 10 days I am an owner of Superb II FL with AFS xenon headlights.
Searched a lot, but couldn't find any info regarding two things which makes me crazy:

- is there anyway to mode the sensor for the lights - they turn on even if the sun is shining directly to me .. i guess it is quite sensitive ? My parents have Audi A4 2010 and there is setting in car menu which you can modify the automatic headlights sensor to start headlights early, normally or late. In late mode they are working pretty fine.

- second - is there any way to change the setting of when headlights start, because now when the sensor decides it is dark outside, i turn on the key and headlights start immediately (not after the engine has started). This is a problem I think because while starting, the electricity is shaking the electrical signal and xenon bulbs might go out..

Thank you in advance !

Best wishes !

there is no selectable delay that I am aware of that can be set.

you could simply turn them off auto when you start the car though.

Even if the headlights do dim, flicker or turn off whilst starting the car, they should turn back on at full brightness once it's running. If they don't, you may have a failing ballast or bulb.

As for the sensitivity, you can probably adjust it using VCDS or similar. I don't think there is anything as nice as early, normal and late. Instead, you'll probably need to tweak the glass type or something like that.

@langers2k, they do turn back at full brightness once it is running, but this is not healthy neither for the battery, neither for the xenon bulbs as the are not the cheapest think on the Earth.
I just wans headlights to turn on after the engine is already running.

Assuming the battery is in good condition and you're starting the car within a minute or two of turning the ignition on, there is no reason it should damage the battery. I doubt it does much damage to the bulbs either, mine have certainly survived 100's if not 1000's of engine starts with the headlight on...

I've just gone through the BCM coding and I can't see anything that would obviously prevent the headlights turning on before the engine starts or while it's not running. I also don't recall anyone mentioning such a tweak previously either.

If it's something you're genuinely concerned about, your best bet it to keep the headlight switch in the off position unless you need the headlights on.

Check the DRL settings. Some countries require dip beams to be used for DRL rather than a separate low output bulb, meaning there's a configuration option for it. What I can't remember is whether it's in the settings menu in the MFD or requires diagnostics.

I shared the same concerns as the OP, so got into the habit of keeping the switch in the '0' off position, and flicked them over to 'Auto' either immediately after starting the engine, or mid-journey if I needed the headlights on.

I also know plenty of people who don't and never suffered any issues with regards to battery or xenon bulb life.

I am just old school and like to minimise electrical load before the engine is running, as well as not liking the bulbs flickering as the starter motor consumed the bulk of the batteries output power.

The starter circuit cuts electrical power to everything except the engine ECU and required consumers on the engine during startup precisely to remove the load on the battery during that time. VAG cars have done this for at least the last 30 years. It's not something to worry about.

I read about setting the sensitivity of the light sensor by changing the type of glass of the windshield in VCDS. Has the windshield been renewed? Is the sensor still tight against the glass and the glass clean?

I wouldn't worry much about the xenon lights. My car has 250,000 km and still has the original xenon lamps.

For a Matiz, I heard the halogen lamps break easily. It is therefore advised to switch the lights ON BEFORE you start the engine, to prevent the lights from getting 14.4V at once while the engine is running.

The tail lights definately dim, not fully extinguish, during engine cranking on my 2011 Superb.
