TDi or TSi

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

Looking at MK2 fabia Monte Carlo and not sure between the TDI and the TSI.

Have driven both a Diesel 75bhp, rubbish. Diesel 105bhp much better, and a petrol 105bhp also good and more fun driven spiritedly.

Drawn to the TDI for MPG and cheap tax but after a bit of googling it seems the 1.6tdi lump is not the most reliable.

Would the TSI be the better option for reliability, and what sort of mileage is acceptable for these cars?

Thanks!

Hello Tom 👋

It really depends on what you'll be using the car for.  Rule of thumb tends to be if you're not doing 20k+ miles per annum, then you're probably better of in a petrol.

They all go on forever if looked after properly.

Just get what you prefer, you’ve driven both options so you must have a preference one way or the other.

With the Fabia, both versions are so economical there isn’t enough money in it one way or the other for fuel savings to be a big issue unless you’re doing inter-galactic miles as @CallmeGaz says.

I’ve actually built a spreadsheet comparing the diesel and petrol Fabias taking into account servicing / projected repairs / depreciation etc. at 15,000 miles and the overall saving on the diesel worked out to be about £200 or £300 a year (I can’t recall which) - Then I worked out that if I avoid supermarket fuels (as anecdotal evidence suggests you should at least some of the time), the saving is even less.

The TSi 105 reputation is hardly untarnished either.

Supposedly safe after 2012, my 2014 succumbed to the fairly common turbo failure at 26k, but at least it wasn't the renowned camchain issues that got me.

Oh, and If you have fun driving it, the mpg isn't all that great.
