65 mph drone / vibration tdi vrs

Featured Replies

Morning all,

2 weeks into ownership and just trying to iron out all the little problems. Main annoyance is that between 65 mph and 75mph there is a significant drone and you can feel vibration (not knocking) in the foot well and steering wheel.

Had my mechanic check and the balancing was out but hasn't resolved the issue.

When you dip the clutch the sound persists so are we thinking wheel bearings?

Have you checked the rear tyres for saw-toothing yet?

Rear's were checked yesterday, balanced and one was replaced

Defo a front wheel bearing, changed nearside on  the golf at only 10k

It does look like a wheel bearing then, but saw-tooth is cheaper to check for, and easier to fix if you run a non-directional tyre.

Don't think these have ever been done at 50k

Thanks - definitely coming from the fronts though and they are 4 month old decent tyres that have been balanced this week so should be ok!

Any recommendations for wheel bearings to replace them with?

That's coming up as a rear wheel bearing ... It looks as if OP needs the front changed

Interesting.  In the last month I've been increasingly aware of a droning at certain speeds from the front.  At first I thought clutch or flywheel, although clutch was replaced 3000 miles ago and doesn't slip.  Car at 42000miles. I booked it into a VAG indie last week. They reported slight wear to one front wheel bearing and replace the bearing.

However most of the droning continued. Appeared at 35mph to disappear at 40mph to return even louder at all speeds over 60mph as experienced by myself and the garage even after they swapped   the rears to the front.  They spun the wheels off the car up to speed to check for roundness, saw toothing , bumps and lumps. Nothing.

Tyres are Michelin Cross Climates 195/65/R15 on all 4 corners and are 2500 miles old.  Run at 30psi.

The mechanic got curious.  He took the wheels from his own Golf and went out in my Octy 11 1.6 TDI 2012.  No droning, silent as a lamb, nice drive he said. Complain he said or replace the fronts with regular tyres without the Cross Climates 'V' tread pattern.  He thought that maybe a Octy based on a 2003 Golf using latest design 2016 'state of the art' tyres could be incompatible.  Oh great!

I played with different tyre pressures and the best I can get is, at 32psi all round is, very little droning now at 35mph. Very loud at 60mph, disappearing at 70mph to reappear at 75mph never returning anyl speeds over 80mph.

The Michelin's were purchased from Costco.  Went there on Monday and they examined the tyres very carefully without seeing a problem.

On my suggestion and a re-vistit they said they'd fit my full sized spare ( regular type-tyre) and another same sized wheel/tyre to the front for me no cost.

Some are saying my almost 20th century agriculturally  designed car shouldn't have 21st century  rubber fitted !!

I hope to let you know.

Yep of course your right I hadn't checked but Febi remains my choice of bearing 😉

How odd, the only time my Cross Climates have caused obvious droning is as the rears sawtooth slightly. I rotate them front to back as that keeps it under control :)

Mine are 205/55 R16's and normally around 34 psi.

When I get a new set, I'll probably get the tracking done to reduce the rear camber as that *should* help reduce the sawtoothing...

Interesting... so the tyres on the front of mine are Vredestein which are only about 4 months old I believe.  The balancing was around 40g out on one and 20g out on the other so they sorted that out but made little difference as it happened.  My mechanic squirted some spray oil into the transmission so that it would be pulled into the bearings and was significantly better for 24 hours then returned.

Drove to Manchester yesterday (90miles) and the noise was really doing my head in - booked in to do the bearings on Tuesday so hopefully will sort it.  He did run one of the wheels off the ground up to 20mph and said there was a noticeable noise from the bearing but "not too bad" so i'm hoping that it sorts it as it was so much better when they had a bit of oil on them!

Sawtoothing is a new one on me to be honest, have done a bit of googling though - what do I need to do to avoid this with future tyre purchases?  My wheels are the vrs blackline so 225/40/18 92y

Thanks mate - I'm just going to let my mechanic source them I think but at least this post gives me hope it will sort it! I desperately want to love my new Octavia but this is not helping!

Brake less aggressively is one solution. Buy a different make of tyres. Don't buy directional tyres.

Cheers will have a look at the pattern on my current ones when I go back to it after work.

Hi CooperDJ,

Saw Toothing is caused by your rear wheel alignment out of spec ... The inside of the tyres wear noticeable quicker than the outside usually as a result of both the camber angle and toe alignment both being out and usually causes one of the edges on the outside tyre block being higher than the other, like the teeth on a saw, and this creates one hell of a hum that sounds just like the drone of a faulty wheel bearing at the back... the only solution is to find somewhere local who can perform a proper 4 wheel alignment, preferably using a Hunter System, to adjust both front and rear..

Thanks for the info!  For me the noise is definitely coming from the fronts,  I'm getting the bearings done tomorrow so i'll update with whether it sorted the problem out for me or not.  I have my fingers crossed!

Quick update....

Just got the car back from the mechanic and it's like night and day - feels like i've been driving with the handbrake on since i've had it now!

He had a nightmare getting them off as the casing had effectively fused to the bracket that holds it on to the drive shaft to the point where he had to cut through the frame of it to get them off. Inside the bearing ring was hanging loose inside.  Previously felt like I effectively had a 65mph limiter on the car but on my quick test drive it was past that with no problems.  He suspects they're the originals (7 y/o / 56k miles) and that the car has been standing still for a while.
