Mk2 FL Octavia ICE upgrade

Featured Replies

I have a MK2 FL Octavia with the Bolero head unit and was wondering what worth while upgrade can be easily sorted? I would like to keep all the on screen stuff like climate control, parking distance etc... Looking for pretty much a plug 'n' play upgrade...

Depends what features you're looking to add really :/

To be honest I don't know! hence asking what a worth while upgrade would be? or do I just leave it as is?

The most obvious options are to stick with parts that were an option for a FL MK2 Octavia.

If you want inbuilt sat-nav, there are three obvious options:

- Amundsen (RNS-310)

- Amundsen+ (RNS-315)

- Columbus (RNS-510)

The two Amundsen units are almost identical but take different map updates. The Columbus has a bigger screen and again, takes a different map update.

If you want DAB, you'd need either the Amundsen+ or Columbus. Be warned, not all versions have DAB support so make sure there is a black fakra (antenna) connector on the rear.

If you haven't got bluetooth, you can use a BT module, mic and wiring kit to add support to any of the above headunits.

The only exception is that some versions of the Amundsen+ have BT built in. If there is a sticker that says MAC 00:00:00:00:00:00 then it has no BT, if that value is non-zero, then it should have BT built in.

The later Yeti's (2015+) got newer MIB STD PQ style headunits which are becoming more popular. They kept the same names so the Bolero has no sat nav and the Amundsen has sat nav. They have a more modern interface, BT built in and later versions support Smartlink (Android Auto and Carplay). The biggest issue is that they use component protection so you'll probably need to send the unit abroad to have CP removed and all functions activated. You'll also loose climate display.

Finally, there are various aftermarket Chinese Android based headunits which seem popular. I'm sure someone else will add details as I've never used one nor am I a fan...

Oh - if you decide on either the Amundsen (RNS-310) or Columbus (RNS-510) I have one of each for sale ;)

Thanks for your very detailed reply.

The obvious option to go for would be the Columbus (RNS-510) - it's just finding someone local to me that can help with the coding!

What would the Bolero unit be worth? its in very good working order and condition...

Looking at completed listings on eBay, anywhere between £50 and £100 seems normal for a Bolero. One or two seem to have sold for ~£130 but I'm not sure if that's luck or they are actually different.

You might find a local member with VCDS in one of these threads:

Assuming you buy mine and you're happy to drive towards Cambridge one weekday, I don't mind meeting you in the Royston/Letchworth area to help with both fitting and coding. Drop me a PM if you're interested :)

The Amundsen has been sold but the Columbus is still available.

I can't receive PM's at the moment but hopefully that'll be resolved soon. If you're interested, just reply to the above topic :)
